What happens to college hoops this year?

Postby Red » May 12th, 2020, 2:29 pm

Just wondering where everyone thinks this might go. Here are a few choices although not an entirely inclusive list.

1- Normal season played as already scheduled
2- Season does not begin on time but is played in it's entirety
3- Season begins late - maybe Dec 1. No holiday/MTE tourneys
4- Non conference games eliminated and season begins around Jan 1
5- No college basketball season

In my head, pretty much all of the choices probably have limits on fan attendance. Or maybe no fans at all.

#1 or #2

If #2, we'll have a January-May season and it will happen because they move football.

No more than 50% capacity anywhere. Different crowd rules by state.

To the delight of all the old fart haters, they ban anyone with gray hair.

I'd say probably number 5.

But more specifically, my guess is that the pandemic will continue through the summer and fall, the NCAA will attempt to have sports with no fans beginning with Fall sports...student athletes will contract the virus which will eventually lead to the cancellation of all NCAA sports in our country until a vaccine is in existence.

Hopefully I'm wrong and they figure out how to hold competitions with no one contracting the virus.

If the China Virus continues, how many small schools are financially forced to drop D1 sports? :?

5

Until there's a vaccine there probably won't be games. Probably will be tried.

I think it just depends on if the virus is relatively quiet or if there are major flareups. If there are no major spikes in cases i think we have a relatively normal season. Probably with some provisions like some mandatory spacing of fans in all arenas.

Im going to go with Option 6, "Other" for both football and basketball. I think everyone will play except schools from the west coast and the northeast. Loyola and Chicagoland schools (excluding Valpo) could also see their seasons cancelled. I also think everyone that plays will play with fans in the stands. With a lot of states opening up now I just don't see everyone getting their seasons cancelled. Heck Indiana is still planning on having the Indy 500 in August with 300,000 fans.

Problem with the not doing anything until there is a cure is that there may never be a cure. It is a virus that can mutate. A flu shot for example is not a vaccine because you can still get the flu or a mutated version of it. I will also say that if they come up with something a lot of people will probably refuse to take it, including myself.

I'll go with 2.
2- Season does not begin on time but is played in it's entirety.

If at all possible most conferences will attempt to play, regardless of pandemic. The loss of an entire seasons'
revenues would be catastrophic. ;)

Miss all of you folks.
