I think this was becoming inevitable given their downward spiral in recent years. Announcing it with 3 weeks to go in the season seems a little odd.

That seems like an odd clause to have. Was the AD nuts when they signed Dan to that contract? Seemed like a very one sided contract that didn't make much sense from a distance.

Muller’s agent definitely took ISU for a ride after winning a share of the regular season title in ‘16-‘17.

It was the most coach-friendly contract in the history of contracts. There's been a ton of discussion on the RBF.net forum if you want to dive deeper but here are the high level points.

The Athletic Department must provide a minimum of 30 days notice of the contract's termination.(This allows them to begin the search immediately and the names being tossed around are making some fans very excited)

Remainder of the contract will be paid out. ISU owes Muller anywhere from 1 to 1.2 million not to be their coach for the next two seasons.

The extension came after the 2016-17 season where the Birds had a share of the conference title and a 1 seed in the NIT. So Larry Lyons (AD at the time) also put in:
If Muller were to terminate the contract he would owe back 50k...AND guarantee a H/H with the school he left ISU for. At the time, the only job he was seriously considered for was Dayton, which ISU played somewhat regularly, anyway.

Just a bad contract overall for the Birds.
