Sports Illustrated article on McDemott

A little publicity for CU and the MVC on SI.com this week. Not sure if it will be in the print edition.

"In December, Doug moved to small forward to accommodate Rutgers transfer Gregory Echenique, a 6'9" center who became eligible after the first semester. Combined with 6'9" Kenny Lawson, the trio composes the MVC's best frontcourt. The Bluejays are an outside contender for the league's automatic bid—especially if Doug can deliver more 28-point performances, the way he did against Drake on Jan. 1."

Nice pub, but they are not the MVC's best frontcourt. Maybe next year if CU can get someone to replace Lawson the Softie.

I can't disagree with that assessment. I used to say Kenny's problem is that he had no one to really practice against that would make him better. Kenton Walker did not give him that when he was here, and then we had no one else bigger than 6'8" after Kenton left. But, Gregory has been here more than a year and it hasn't helped Kenny get any tougher. I fear it is too late for Kenny to get any tougher or learn to play bigger. Which leads to the problem with Gregory's improvement. With only Kenny to practice against, there isn't much to get him used to the physical play against more aggressive, physical inside players. As a result, it is taking Gregory a little while to get used to playing at a more physical level. I still think he and McDermott together will be the best front court in the league by the end of the season - and certainly should be next year.

To add a point from the article, which answers questions posed previously about why he didn't recurit Doug to Iowa State:

"it's easiest on the father and son if the son is either one of the best four or five players on the team or a walk-on who'll never play. Anywhere in between, and it can be difficult."

It was not clear that Doug would be one of the top 4 or 5 at ISU, and he clearly would not have been a walk-on who would never play. I have heard Greg express this sentiment in the past.

True, he apparently suffers from the same disease as Stutz: not living up to expectations-itis.

If Dougy and Daddy wanted to be together so bad they could have been. Doug would have played good minutes this year at ISU and could have moved with daddy when he got fired.

Don't buy into that story. Greg knew he had only 1 year left at Iowa State. Why have your kid come to play for you when you know you'll be gone and who knows where you land after that. Having him go and play for one of your best friend's certainly seemed like a very option at the time.

I'm at peace with the whole situation as long as Greg continues to lose to Ben on a regular basis.

Got my SI in the mail today and this was included in the print copy. It was essentially a full single page article on Greg and Doug with photos of each.

It's hard to believe that Lawson was the MVC Preseason Player of the Year.
