Creighton at Drake

Lets gett this started with the OWH's article this morning:

http://www.omaha.com/article/20110206/BLUEJAYS/702069848/-1#jays-drake-aim-to-build-momentum-for-stretch-run

Since it's in Drake and we still have a Korver on the roster, I suppose it shouldn't be too much of a stretch to ask for one last Bulldog killing performance in Des Moines by a Korver; lets say 5 - 7 from 3. I don't expect as many CU fans to make the trek this year given it is a Tuesday night. IMO, the Van Deest/Echinque matchup should be a lot of fun. In Omaha, Gregory played jsut 6 minutes as he was whistled for some quick fouls and was just getting back into playing. He and Van Deest should have some good battles over the next couple of years.

Can CU defend the perimeter shot? Can Korver lock down on Rice? Can DU control McDermott? Will Josh Jones have another positive game, or will his inconsistency rear up? Will CU avoid stupid turnovers? Will Kenny Lawson, Jr. show up? Lots of questions to be answered in this one. Not only do we have to wonder which CU team will show up, we also have to worry whether the DU team that lost by 15 or so in Omaha or the one that has played very well in its last two outings will show up.

I agree that Echinique and Van Deest will have some good battles over the next few years, but I don't know if Van Deest will even play. He re-injured his ankle in the first half of the Illinois State game, and sat out the rest of that game. He missed the entire SIU game, and played only sparingly in the win over UNI.

He joins a lengthy injured list for the Bulldogs:

Frank Wiseler----starting point guard.....out for the season.

Karl Madison----backup point guard....out for the season

Jeremy Jeffers-----backup '3'.....out for the season

Jordan Clarke-----starting '4'.....playing with only 1 usable arm (broke his elbow in 2nd game of season)

But, even with all the injuries, Bulldogs have been playing much better the last 4 games. Should be a good ballgame.

I can answer this question: Can Korver lock down on Rice?

The answer: No.

Here is another question: Can Korver lock down on anybody?

The answer: No.

Lock Down might not be the right choice, but in round one Rice did not score on Korver until he shook loose for a three with maybe a minute left in the game. Korver isn't the fleetest of foot, and he hasn't been perfect, but he has drawn the assignment of stopping the best outside shooter on the other team most games. He has done a pretty good job of it this year. He held Jimmers Fredette to his lowest scoring game of the season. So perhaps he can't lock down, but he has been pretty succesful in holding opposing team's top scorers in check.

Korver did not hold Jimmer Fredette to his lowest scoring game of the season. That was a task given primarily to Antoine Young, with Josh Jones giving him a break at times. SI or somebody even did a whole article about the way Antoine played defense that game.

I don't understand Greg McDermott's constant references to how good Korver's defense has been this season, myself. I think he's done some things very well, has been the best senior on the team all year, etc. -- but defense? Where? What I see consistently every single game is Korver's man shooting wide open shots with Korver running out and putting a hand up after the ball leaves the shooter's hand.

When Creighton comes into Des Moines, the crowd is always great and the atmosphere is about as good as it can possibly get in the Knapp Center. I don't know how it will be on a Tuesday but I'm sure students will be there after the UNI win. Anyway, it'll be fun to see Van Deest (if he plays) and Greg go at it down low. And well, the two best young players in the Valley will be on the court tomorrow and they're both ridiculously hot right now so that will be entertaining, as well. This promises to be a fun, competitive game. I really wish I could be there.
