Cape Girardeau, Mo. – Wichita State looked every bit the favorite at the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Golf Championship, bulldozing into first place and taking a comfortable 24-stroke lead into Tuesday’s final round. Louis Cohen Boyer owns a one-stroke advantage for the individual lead.
The individual race remains wide open, with several Shockers in the hunt for medalist honors. Boyer topped the field at 3-under, following closely by Rafael Becker (-2), Calvin Pearson (-1) and Hunter Sparks (-1). No other school had a player below par.
Wichita State is 7-under (288-281=569), well in front of Illinois State at 17-over (297-296=593). Host Southern Illinois is in third at +24 (304-296=600).
Unanimous favorites in the pre-tournament coaches’ poll, WSU grabbed a lead midway through the first round. A well-rounded team effort lifted the Shockers to a 9-stroke advantage after the first 18 holes at Dalhousie Country Club – a 7,175-yard, par-72 gem outside of St. Louis. Ideal weather conditions (sunny, 72-degrees, light breeze) kept scores respectable at the challenging course.
