WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita women's tennis team claimed their fifth consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship on Sunday, defeating Southern Illinois 4-0 in the final match of the tournament.
In doubles play, Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul and Montse Blasco Fernandez were first of the court, defeating Anita Lee and Korey Love, 8-2. Carla Venticinque and Rebecca Pedrazzi then gave the Shockers the doubles point when they took down Natasha Tomishima and Jennifer Dien, 8-6.
Wichita State would only need three matches to put down the Salukis. Blasco Fernandez defeated Ariadna Cairo Baza, 6-1 6-0 and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul took down Jennifer Dien 6-1, 6-0. Freshman No. 2 singles player Julia Schiller then clinched the match and gave Wichita State their fifth consecutive MVC Tournament title by defeating Natasha Tomishima, 6-3, 7-6.
The Shockers will now head to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive year and fourth under head coach Colin Foster. The NCAA Women’s Tennis Selection Show is Tuesday, April 30 at 3:30 p.m.
