It has just been bleak when I visited there. The people weren't very friendly and just vast farmland all around. Very flat land. Not what I am accustomed to. My opinion is all I was voicing. Iowans as a people just make me chuckle sometimes. Des Moines isn't bad and Iowa City is okay even if it isn't as cool as Ames. And with not as pretty girls too. Culturally Iowans fascinate me. This thread is for entertainment, I don't mean to offend UNI fans and especailly Drake fans.

No, no, no. I think Drake fans are cool. Des Moines is cool, what happened to me there one time was an isolated incident. I don't particularly care for UNI or their fans however.

Don't worry Casey....I'm just messing with you a little bit. I should have put some kind of smiley at the end of my post to give you an idea I wasn't 100% serious.

I understand that rating citites is all subjective, but when someone ranks Iowa City behind Ames, well it really makes me scratch my head. Are they ranking Iowa City behind Ames because Des Moines is nearby, or on it's own merits?

I think Casey is either confused, swinging at thin air- or George the Chili King being a mere half hour away sways his judgement too much.

Here's a Wikipedia tidbit: Ames is the only town in Iowa with a population of greater than 50,000 that does not have a state highway serving it.

Ames is a s*** hole that ranks behind Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls, Western Waterloo (the East side is it's own little place), and probably Davenport, Dubuque and much of Siouxer City.

If you think the area around Cedar Falls is flat you haven't been very many places in the country.

People in Cedar Falls are very friendly, however, we keep to ourselves. It may come off as "cold", but as you are out and about in town you will be ignored unless you start the conversation.....actually it's the same way in Des Moines, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Omaha, Fargo, Seattle, Austin (TX), Chicago, and any city I've been too.

If you think Iowa has some odd cultures you really need to further examine Missouri. Once the boarder is crossed from Iowa to Missouri it's like a different country - and I don't get that feeling going to Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Nebraska.

When I make my yearly drive to the MVC tourney, I always get a kick out of the stretch of interstate between Columbia and St Louis -- there are literally porn shops (marked by giant XXX signs) every mile. Obviously that stretch of Missouri has yet to get the internet...

I'm certainly no Iowa expert but that is the impression I got in that Ames is better than Iowa City. The ISU girls were prettier than the Iowa ones first off. Plus I like Big XII towns better than Big TEN ones. Maybe if I spent more time in that state I would have a different opinion.

Every place has some of that. Most of them are tshirt Moo fans so they aren't associated much with Missouri State. Springfield is pretty cool area and the passion for MSU is apparent. That is why I like it more than a Omaha or Des Moines. You go there and can miss the fact that Creighton or Drake are there because of lesser interest. If you hang around Springfield people are going to be talking about the Bears. The last time I was in Omaha for a women's basketball game do you know what people were making small talk about? People around me were talking about Eric Crouch and him doing play by play and gaining weight since he stopped playing. It was funny though, I enjoyed it even if it wasn't CU related.

You don't have to be an Iowa expert to use google to find populations...

Iowa City is just under 70k, Ames is just over 50k


Cedar Falls and Waterloo (Which are connected though very different) is about 110K for a population. Waterloo is bigger than Iowa City, and CF is about 39k.
