Wichita State men’s basketball recruit Teddy Hawkins is headed to a prep school. He says it is only delaying his arrival at WSU.
Hawkins, a 6-foot-8 forward from Dayton (Ohio) Dunbar, said he will take the next year to increase his core grade-point average and his standardized test score so that he can become eligible. The NCAA uses a sliding scale to determine eligibility, allowing an athlete to compensate for a low grade-point average by raising the score on a standardized test, or vice versa. At a prep school, Hawkins can retake core courses and the standardized test, without losing a season of eligibility.
He said he intends to sign with the Shockers again during his year at the prep school. While Hawkins said the departure of Dana Ford, who recruited him to WSU, disappointed him, it did not cause him to look elsewhere. Ford went to Missouri Valley Conference rival Illinois State as an assistant coach in May.

A large part of why WSU could get a commitment was that most of the other schools recruiting him and pulled back because they were almost certain he would not qualify. He didn't. More troubling is that rather than go the JUCO route he decided to try to get the ole "quick fix" at prep school.
