How can you expect to win consistently if there's 250 DI schools who can hire away your coach at a moment's notice? Do you think you're just that doggone special? Is Brookings SD magical?
Just a quick response to your last couple of posts. When Nagy left he had the choice of moving on and more than doubling his salary or becoming a 40 year head coach at SDSU. Everyone gets that job itch wondering if there isn't something better. He also had the chance to get closer to family and go to a school that has very good facilities. So yes he did leave, but I don't believe that it was a case where he couldn't wait to get out. I mean we did keep him for 22 years.
I never said that Brookings was a magical place. Those are your words.....but consider this, when Nagy left SDSU we were the only D-1 program whose head coaches for MBB, WBB and Football had been in place for at least 16 years. So yes, we are a stepping stone university, but our coaches aren't beating down the doors to get out.
One last point....when you take LakesBison out of the equation, who exactly are all the Dakota fans on the board clamoring to get in, maybe just a couple of others....lets not stretch the narrative too far.
By the way, I think Valpo was a good choice and you guys missed on Murray. Just my $.02.
Nobody wanted Nagy until recently. SDSU didn't go DI until 2007 and he didn't finish better than 4th in the Summit until 2012. But the fact Wright State doubled his salary tells you you're not funding basketball appropriately for a Valley-level program, if that's what you aspire to be.
I apologize for the sarcasm, but my point is that there's no reason to believe coaching turnover isn't going to hurt SDSU like it would any other program. SIU saw Bruce Weber build a great program, and then lost him to Illinois. Then Matt Painter came in, won and took off to Purdue. Chris Lowery comes in, wins, and SIU boosters have enough and finally put together a million dollar package to keep him there. Problem was they were too late and bet on the wrong horse. Wichita could still be in the Valley if they couldn't afford to keep Marshall. I was responding to your comment questioning why money seems to matter to some of us, and used Brookings as an illustration. Nothing against it, I'm sure it's a lovely place. Just not any different from Carbondale or Wichita.
