"I mean, I had to do what was best for myself and my family," Doug noted. "It would've been tough on me, having to play my dad twice (per year)."

Said Greg McDermott: "I think anybody that doesn't understand the reason (Doug) did what he did doesn't have a clue. Obviously, he had an opportunity to play for his dad in the league he committed to."

Not exactly words of contrition from the McDermotts to the UNI faithful. So playing against Dad one per year is fine, twice would have been tough on the poor fella. And Greg, you don't commit to a league, you commit to a program.

Don't insult our intelligence, we know why this all went down the way it did. A simple statement like, "the timing of my move to Creighton and Doug following put UNI's program in a difficult situation. We're sorry to our friends in Cedar Falls for that, and wish it could have been handled differently." The hard-core fans are never going to forgive, but a statement like that would go a long way toward smoothing things over with the more open minded fans like myself.

Mac had some pretty nice things to say about Cedar Falls, UNI and Jake in the Omaha paper today.

You can nitpick the quote above all you want, but I truly believe that Big Mac didn't think his son would be able to play regularly at the BCS level, especially right away. The fact that Mac wanted to redshirt his son this season at Creighton only reinforces that belief. Before the season, Big Mac told me that he had some concerns about Doug's strength and foot speed. The fact that he underestimated his son's abilities are great for us now, but I never got the impression that Mac was slow-playing his son's talent levels. The "league" comments are relevant in that context.

Again, why is any of that UNI's fault? Doug signed to play at UNI. And nobody made chewy take the creighton job.

For some of the older people out there you will remember that his father was killed in the bombing in Beirut and this was just a few months later. Anyhow, the ASU fans started chanting "Hey Steve, where's your dad?" during the shootaround and he heard it. I can't imagine what it would be like to hear your peers and older people that should have better sense yelling that at a kid. I took a scan of some thoughts on the panthernation website and was just appalled. Hopefully that is just a small segment of the fanbase, I know Terry Allen thinks that UNI has tremendous fans.

You're kidding right? There is nothing even close to the Kerr situation here. The discussion is involving the booing of a visiting coach and player, some interesting (maybe lame) signs in the student section, and using unflattering nicknames.

Am I missing something here, because I think all of the above pretty much happens regularly in college basketball. It's just a little more intense for this game.

I'd also like to see some of these "appalling" comments.
Um...thanks for the lession on how a message board is suppose to work...didn't know that. But if your comment had any value at all THEN you would be properly using this message board. And just for the record, I think all "white outs" "blue outs" or yellow outs" are a joke.
Um.. No problem. Glad i could help you out. I think you've added as much to this thread as I've had. Are you mad about the 4th place comment? It was a true comment though. No reason to get uptight about it with me. I said it's too bad, didn't I?

Who said it was anybody's fault? Certainly not I.

In fact, I'm actually on the record earlier this thread saying that I understand why UNi fans would be upset and that I'd be upset to. Boo Big Mac all you want -- he's dealt with it from UNI fans in the past while at ISU. He also dealt with it from ISU fans earlier this year. I don't think it would bother much coaches at all anyway (although I know one coach in the league that might start crying). I know Dana used to say that he'd rather have opposing fanbases be obsessed with his behaviors than focus on his teams.

All I was attempting to do in the quote above was explain the "in this league" comment because I thought it was being misinterpreted by the OP.

Finally, you are right -- nobody made Chewy take the CU job. But c'mon dude, its Creighton. People ditch BCS jobs to come to Omaha. Heck, tons of UNI alums have moved to and work in Omaha. Of course he's not going to say no. After all, we are apparently everybody's rival....

Funny, a lecture on class from someone who believes it is 'classy' for a coach to do fist-pumps in the face of opposing players during the post-game hand-shake. Thanks but no thanks on your advice.
