Rebound from what? You’re speculating on something that COULD happen years down the road. As of now, there’s nothing to rebound from.

And you have to understand expansion isn’t RPI-based. It’s money- and identity-based.

Putting aside that the AAC would have to one day be gutted so thin they’re making less tv money than the MVC (<1% odds):

Wichita’s President, like any institution, wants his university aligned with schools that resemble Wichita (urban, public).
Cincinnati
Memphis
Houston
Tulsa (proximity makes up for private status)

Those are the schools Wichita aspires to be or aspires to be associated with. That’s minimum 4 schools before you even reach the 1st MVC school. You can probably add a 5th in SMU (urban, established brand) despite being private. So unless all 5 are poached (won’t happen), Wichita’s closed the books on MVC forever.

You have to think like a University President. They don’t consider 10 year RPI averages like fans would.

I could say the same thing for why this UMASS news could be more significant than you think. University presidents would flip to get UMASS Army and VCU and you can bet the networks would like that too.

But they have to bring above-league-average value for the existing members to benefit. Otherwise, everyone’s share gets smaller.

This is why the BXII added WVU but not Louisville + Cincy.

This is why the WAC 16 broke up and the “Airport 5” (Wyo/AFA/CSU/Utah/BYU IIRC) formed the Mountain West. The WAC added too many teams with tv value below league average so everyone else’s shares reduced.

Remember, it’s different for leagues (B1G/SEC/PAC) who rely on mass distribution of conference networks. They have financial incentive to roll the dice on questionable additions (Rutgers/Maryland/Missouri/Colorado/Utah). Everyone else is a different animal. No one wants to be the next CUSA.

Army I believe would do that for the AAC with their national following and the yearly national event that is the Army-Navy game. You also have to consider the positive effect this would have on the relationship between UCONN and the conference. My understanding is that UCONN is really pushing for UMASS and isn't exactly content with their position in the AAC. Losing UCONN would be a massive blow to the athletic and academic profile of the conference. If adding UMASS is the cost of placating UCONN and getting Army football on board, you add UMASS without hesitation. They already spend to AAC levels and are very committed to developing their athletics.

Updated budget data which may help inform\influence expansion decisions.

Why would Army "do that for the AAC"? I know Navy buckled on independence for football, but Army also has an annual game with Notre Dame; with Air Force always on the schedule that would leave only 2 open dates a year for an academy that likes to use its football program to recruit cadets.

Doesn't look like the AAC is expanding anytime soon. The Howard Herman "Designated Hitter" article.

What does UMass bring to a conference? Their football program is...well, they are 15-59 since going to 1A football.

Their mens and womens basketball program are both bad. Like, UMass mens basketball has made one NCAA tournament in the last 20 years and that was 4 years ago, they are 59-73 since that tournament appearance, finishing at 240, 193, and 170 in the RPI the last three years, 81 in 14/15.

Their baseball team hasnt made the NCAA tournament in over 20 years.

Their hockey program has made one tournament appearance 11 years ago.

The only sports UMass are halfway decent at are soccer and lacrosse.

Title of article: UMass to AAC? Don't count on it

So much for this article being the smoking gun of UMass/Army/VCU to AAC and SLU to MVC. But no worries - the MVC is monitoring Tulsa closely because they slashed a couple salaries!
