Murphy first told police a 19 year old man fell and hit his head when police and medics arrived, but later admitted he was handling a firearm in his bedroom when it accidentally discharged. Murphy has cooperated with police since his admission to the accidental shooting

Burnside probably has better insight than any other reporter, as she's married to the Des Moines Police's press spokesman.

So, not to trivialize this, but accidental shooting with a legally owned gun....cooperating with the police after initially panicking.

To clear up a few items in this very sensationalized lede:

The victim sustained a serious, but non-life threatening injury. The shooting was accidental, and the only 2 charges are misdeanors for lying to police and discharging a weapon inside city limits. These are serious charges yes, and he should not have lied.

It was also not intentional, police have verified there are no additional charges expected, and the weapon was legally purchased and licensed.
