I don't think that people are praying that he leaves, personally, I think he's a good guy. Passionate and intense, but a good guy. That said, when he was hired at Wichita State, Shocker fans either knew, or should have known that Wichita State would either be a stepping stone or where his career took a setback. The same goes for Martin, Jacobson and Jankovich. As for Jank, it appears his career is in a bit of a stall. That is the nature of the beast.

as for when Marshall leaves, well, he has been very cautious his entire career, so if offered the Tennessee job, he just might turn it down if everything isn't perfect, who knows? A very good read about Gregg Marshall was written when he was at Winthrop, it is very telling: http://thebullspen.com/index.php?topic=31906.0

What I took from it is that Gregg is always looking to adevance up, that he will not move laterally or upwards if the money isn't much more than at his present position and also, but he does want to coach in a BCS conference and the South is his home. It also gives a little window as to why Suellenthrop hasn't said a peep, because Marshall refuses to discuss any of his potential career moves with anyone in the press and Suellenthrop wouldn't talk if he couldn't confirm it.

Here is an excerpt:
At the time, "it was all new to me," Marshall said. "Tennessee flies me to meet them on a private jet. It was the first time I'd ever been on a private jet. I couldn't believe it. They had these great chairs, papers for me to read. Then my cell phone rings. I had forgotten to turn it off. So I quickly turn it off, and the pilot leans back, and I'm thinking that he's going to yell at me, that I just put us all at risk. He said, 'Don't worry about it. Talk all you want to.' "

He talked to American, Middle Tennessee and South Alabama, among others. At the time, he was eager to tell reporters he was interviewing. Now, he plays it cooler, offering nothing other than a "no comment" when speculating on his future.

"I think he was looking to conquer the world, make it to the SEC or NBA in a giant leap right away," Kresse said. "I think he was looking to go right to a major conference school, an ACC or SEC-type school. I don't think he understood that you probably have to take an intermediate stop, at a higher midmajor."

If his desire to skip an intermediate job was rooted in ego in the past, it is now rooted in maturity. Marshall realizes Winthrop is a good job, and not one to leave lightly. Most of the traditional stepping-stone leagues are in the Midwest, making a job there a considerable risk for a slight increase in pay.

"I'd also be moving to an area of the country I'm not familiar with," Marshall said. "Why put myself in that position?"

Despite his track record, which includes success at every stop, Marshall is aware of how quickly things can change. What he leaves unsaid is how critical his judgment has to be on his next move.

If things went poorly for four seasons at Tennessee, he would have made enough money to put his children (and likely his children's children) through college. If things went equally poorly at an upper midmajor program, he would be scrambling for an assistant coaching position that likely would not pay half what he currently makes.

iSASO wrote:Some people are simply praying that Marshall leaves so that WSU will get worse. Those same people fail to realize that having a coach that is sought after is a good thing. Just ask Barry Hinson, and now add Chris Lowery and Jank to that list. What the heck, add Greg McDermott to that list as well. He wasn't the hot commodity at Iowa State that Marshall appears to be, if the rumor is true about Tennessee.

Therefore, it's pointless to bring up these rumors. It's a compliment to the job that Marshall has done and Shocker fans should embrace it. Why aren't Creighton fans talking about McDermott being a candidate for the job? What has Marshall actually done to deserve being on the rumor mill?

If its a complement that he is getting attention why do shocker fans then get so pissed off about it? You think if Marshal leaves, WSU will get worse? That really shows how you feel about your program.

I'm confident Marshall will leave WSU. The only question is "when"? WSU has a recent track record of hiring successful coaches. When a school does that consistently, the fans should be ready for speculation about their coach, amd prepared for his departure.

It's not like WSU hires BCS retreads (Altman, McDermott) who have no chance to sniff a BCS job for years.

I'm getting to see some great basketball and WSU is close to Top-25 status. What more could I ask from a coach? I guess I could ask for more interesting games. That 14+ average margin of victory doesn't lend itself to a lot of crowd excitement, which always was a key component of attending WSU games. Now the games are like reruns of each other.

The color of the non-white uniforms in CKA changes, but the result lately has been watching WSU's walkons play another team's tired starters in the last 5 or so minutes of the game.

When not even KU is safe when a coach says he "will never leave", it's foolish for a MVC fan to expect a coach to be in this league more than 5 - 7 years. We can only hope that our coaches leave for better jobs (Turgeon) and don't end up as someone's DoBo (Hinson).

The jury is still out on whether Altman left for a better job. It seems he left for a job no other coach would sniff.

"It's not a rivalry", but CU fans are trying awfully hard to make mileage off of this rumor and trying to stick it in the faces of WSU fans. If it's not a rivalry, why would CU fans be so passionate about rumors of Marshall leaving? Maybe it was only "not a rivalry" when CU was winning.

Wichita State is a very different program than the rest of the Valley. WSU has tremendous equity and resources that can be tapped for future growth. As Mark Turgeon said, Wichita is a major program trapped in a mid-major conference. He has the largest fanbase by far in the Valley and unmatched recruiting resources. He is paid north of $925,000 and has an $80,000 budget for personal flights -most of which are by way of private jet.

Here are a couple comments made a few days ago in a NC State forum discussing the possibility of hiring Gregg:

After citing an ESPN article where Marshall is effusive with praise over the great job he has at WSU, one fan says:

"I support Marshall, but I think this shows that it wouldn't be as easy of a hire as most here think."

More comments:

"Where does Witchita State get all of its money from? And $80,000 for flights"

"I would say its a 3% chance we get him"

And then the red-assed contingent chimes in after the ego-disturbing aforementioned comments:

"Don't want him here any way. We can do better than Marshall. Let him stay in Wichita."

Then a voice of reason:

"MBPackFan wrote: Don't want him here any way. We can do better than Marshall. Let him stay in Wichita.

fan reply: I am not so sure about that"

"12PACKed wrote:
MBPackFan wrote: Don't want him here anyway. We can do better than Marshall.Let him stay in Wichita.

fan reply: Yes God forbid that NCSU actually hires a winner for once. I know it totally goes against everything we stand for."

"I'm not so sure either. That article told me a few things. Even the mid-major coaches have it better than I thought. Weprobably wouldn't be offering him much of a raise. The midset is not to just jump at a paycheck or any move up the basketball ladder, but to be very careful about which move up is made. If he wouldn't give Iowa an interview, how can we say that he would jump at our job given the chance of player losses in the off season and a fan base that justified or not is increasingly getting a reputation of being unreasonable?"

Here's a nice synopsis into Marshall's career history:

"I lived right down the road from Winthrop when Marshall was there and was very impressed with him. He took a small program that had never done anything and made them into the perennial best team in their league. Not only that but he didn't bolt after he got the first whiff of national attention, like 95% of coaches in his position would have done. He either turned down USC stayed there, and to my surprise kept winning. I used work in Rock Hill and everybody there were just happy to have him while he was there but knew he would eventually go on to bigger and better things. He filled up their tiny gym while he was there and people were really excited.

He is a winner who has shown he can take a program from the bottom of their pier group to the top, and keep it there over a long period. That is exactly what we need.

Now this doesn't necessarily translate into success at a bigtime conference but it is the right resume for a mid-major coach to make the next step.

Ironically, his loyalty to Winthrop when he could have taken any number of offers makes me wonder if he would leave Wichita State before he is ready. I seemed to remember him saying something to the tune of "I'm not done with the job I'm doing here"."

Wichita State certainly has the resources to keep Gregg as long as he wants to stay. Considering his decisions in the past, I would bet HCGM has a good chance of being in Wichita for a loooong time.

Ok...re-read the whole thread again and where are the "CU fans" that are trying awfully hard to make mileage off of this? Just one fan asked a simple question in a very nice tone and your fan base goes nuts.

Chill out..enjoy the year and will see you in St. Louie!
