I agree with this. He won't need to cheat to recruit/win at Iona.

The problem is the NCAA will never give him or Iona a chance to do so. In the immortal words of Tark: "The NCAA was so mad at Kentucky that they gave Cleveland State another year of probation." It's one thing to let a school like Louisville get away with cheating and snubbing their nose at the NCAA; it's another to let Iona get away with that. Show causes & postseason bans are in Iona's immediate future.

My quick reading of "show cause" suggests that Iona in theory could be penalized just because of the hire but I can see no logic for it being done. Everything that Pitino does will be studied under a microscope and everything that he mutters in his sleep will be recorded and reviewed by a full time NCAA committee. So? Risk vs reward?

As for the man himself he is 68 years old with a estimated net worth of $45,000,000. It is hard for me to imagine a man in that position rehabbing himself just so that he can get back to the top and resume cheating.

OK I have never met him and have no idea how his mind functions. Seemingly he is like some others in government in that they order things accomplished without wanting to know any details. But! What will this man want written on his tombstone?

Even if the NCAA doesn't penalize Iona with a postseason ban specifically, if they give Pitino a 3 year show cause on say October 15th, 1.) Iona's season is immediately in jeopardy, especially if they don't have a ready and capable coach in waiting there and 2.) their entire 2021 recruiting class goes up in the air about a month away from signing day if Pitino's future becomes murky there.

Piecing through this Pitino story is really interesting. I'll string together various info from Dan Patrick, Jay Bilas and others.
A. His apartment is 25 minutes from campus and his son only 10. Various connections with campus administrators.
B. Only 3 jobs he would have considered (all catholic) with the others being Providence (the job didn't open), Holy Cross, and Iona.
C. The show cause concerns for Iona appear to be minimal partially because they aren't returning much and Bilas implied that the real danger is to Louisville.
D. The Iona fan board is ecstatic even with the realization they have come under the microscope.

Maybe Iona is just in the right place at the right time. Everybody knows he can coach if his recruiting assistants ( his take) just follow the rules.

More: 5 year deal, $700,000 first year, $10,000,000 contract buyout
Maybe fact, maybe fiction but phone call comes in and secretary tell him it is Joe Smith who says he owns a College. Nooooo that is Joe Smith from Iona College. :D

Bryce Drew to Grand Canyon

Jeff Lindler from Northern Colorado to Wyoming.

Both good hires. Really surprised Drew went to Grand Canyon.

Big money and great atmosphere at Grand Canyon in a beautiful area of the country.

2 former Valley players and assistants landed head coaching jobs today:

Brad Korn (formerly at SIU & Mo. St.) at SEMO; Luke Yaklich (IlSU) at UIC

I LOVE this hire for UIC. Absolute home run. I think they finally got it right on this one.

Is it? He didn't really move the needle for Shaka Smart.

I bet he would have been at the top of Loyola's list if Porter left. Illinois State too probably if they tanked again next year and decided to move on from Muller.

I suspect Roger Powell was at the top of UIC's list which would have been even better but if he holds out for another year or so at Gonzaga he might be able to set his sights even higher than UIC. Rumor has it he was VU's first choice to succeed Bryce but he chose to stay with him instead. He either really likes being an assistant or he's fishing for a much bigger offer than any that he's received yet. As I said if he waits and Gonzaga continues to do well he just might get it too.

Obviously Powell has plenty of ties to the Chicagoland area, but he would be wise to cast his eye towards any quality mid-major job in the country. His tenure at Vandy and Gonzaga probably prepares him for success recruiting outside his comfort zone.
