I've told this story before, but I will share it again. To be clear, I am not absolving the alleged actions of Gregg Marshall.

When we were doing the MVC Hoops Show, we would tape each episode on Thursday evening to review the games of the previous week and preview the weekend games. We were joined by a coach and a media member from a particular school. The show aired in Omaha, Wichita, Des Moines, Evansville, and Normal - typically during a morning time slot on Saturday. We were a small time show, but we enjoyed it and the MVC (Elgin, Kern, etc) was really helpful in making it happen.

We had been scheduled to speak with Gregg Marshall and as we started the interview the connection was really bad. We agreed to call him back and encountered the same problem so Coach Marshall tells us very graciously, "I'm going to be home in a couple of minutes, here is my home phone number. Call me on that and we can do the interview".

This was a really small thing, but it was such a nice gesture by a big time coach who didn't need to even be giving an interview to our show, let alone giving us him home phone number so we could speak.

That's the only personal interaction that I ever had with Coach Marshall. I was impressed with how he treated us.

I went back and found the episode online. Marshall interview begin at 27:30, notable for a side discussion about freshman Fred VanVleet coming off the bench.

It's remarkable how much has changed in the MVC since this was taped.

When someone acts like this in public...

It’s not surprising to hear he acts like that in private.

Winning is great and all, but if you can’t do it with class and integrity, what’s the point?

He should have been put on Double Secret Probation after that tantrum.

If the physical abuse is substantiated then they need to part ways with Marshal. If they don't then it really says a lot about that program.

That may be true.

It is also one anecdotal story going against decades of the complete opposite, and plays right into the idea that he knows when to turn it on and off

I've also witnessed him sprint down the tunnels at an MVC arena after a game to accost officials and spend a solid 5-10 minutes saying everything under the sun to them, about them, and about their families and their family's family. Like the officials great grandma was a mother f-er who was into bestiality type stuff.

He's not a good dude. The best thing any former players have said in his defense completely back up the statements that he isn't a good dude. They just happen to be okay with being treated like a subhuman being because it won them some basketball games.

Does anyone even miss those bums from Wichita? I sure don't. Valpo fans are way cooler and instead of a 12 hour trip to Wichita it is only 2 and a half hours to Valpo from Terre Haute. They also have baseball like Wichita so losing Wichita really wasn't a problem to me.

We have baseball but we definitely don't have baseball like Wichita... I don't see us advancing to a Super Regional anytime soon... :) :(

I miss both the WSU and Creighton programs because of the quality of competition. You always have to keep in mind the fans on a chat board are hardly the declarative statement about a fan base. Most programs have both quality and obnoxious fans, just the way things are.

I agree. I've sat among WSU fans at arch madness several times. I found 99% of those fans pretty great. But some of the shocker fans on this board in past years and a large percentage of the ones on shockernet are just toxic.
