Ranking the MVC HCs

Busting Brackets did a break down of every MVC head coach. Here is where The Valley guys landed. The first number is their 2020 ranking, the second is 2019.

https://bustingbrackets.com/2020/10/12/ ... 21-season/

62. Ben Jacobsen 65
85. Porter Moser 80
148. Todd Lickliter NA
157. Brian Wardle 166
158. Darian DeVries 165
166. Dan Muller 138
185. Matt Lottich 175
188. Dana Ford 159
210. Greg Lansing 224
280. Bryan Mullins 307

Two big things stick out to me... Mullins should be way up (comparative to where he is) and Lickliter should be down. I think the rest is pretty good though.

My take away is they go heavily on past performance. Little tape on Mullins and Lickliter has had success elsewhere.

That's a really strange ranking; can understand how they got to it, but still don't see it as very relevant.

Kind of a weird list but it did get me thinking that the MVC has a pretty strong crop of coaches currently.

I think you have Jacobson and Moser (who's really gotten better the last 4 years IMO) at the top... Wardle just on the fringe of that group (to me they just need to put together a full conference season yet).

Devries and Mullins are both good coaches on the rise that have shown immediate promise. I think I like Greg Lansing and it's hard to argue that he hasn't made the best of a really tough situation.

Lottich... I really don't know... He seems a little too mellow at times, and his teams have always played a bit out of control with turnovers, but that run late last year was something else.

Similarly Ford can recruit but it remains to be seen if he can build a team... like Lottich though, I wouldn't write him off.

Muller is a mystery. I have no idea what's happened there the last few years... and Lickliter seems like a bridge coach to get things back in order.

Yeah, if I am starting a program from scratch, I'm taking Mullins over anyone not named Moser, Jake or Wardle.

Id go Jake, DeVries, Mullins and the list ends there. Wardle is consistently 20 wins but not higher. He may sneak in every few years. I'd rather go for an unknown who could propel us to the next level that go for status quo. Moser and Wardle can't. Loyola was a one off. Lightning in a bottle.

Brian Wardle took a dumpster fire of a program that kept 3 returning players and here's how it went:

Year 1: 5 wins, 9th place
Year 2: 13 wins, T-6th place
Year 3: 20 wins, 5th place
Year 4: T-5th place, MVC Tournament Title and NCAA Tournament
Year 5: T-3rd place and MVC Tournament Title with our best player missing 9 games

Brian Wardle deserves to be on this list.

hes a good coach but not one that will take a program to the next tier consistantly. hopefully, ISU will find one after the season. Too bad, UIC hired Yaklich
