AJ Green- Out for Season

Postby BCPanther » December 4th, 2020, 9:12 am

Broke late last night on Jake's call in show that AJ Green has a torn labrum in his hip that is, most likely, going to require surgery. They are getting a 3rd opinion but it looks like he's going to have the surgery and shut it down for the year. I guess if there was a year to miss, it's this one.

Also--Antwan Kimmons has taken a leave from the team to deal with what Jake is calling a 'COVID related family issue' with no timetable to return.

Also--Goanar Mar's waiver appeal was denied so unless the DI council makes everyone eligible he won't play this year.

This wasn't a depressing edition of Jake's call in show at all.

So that leaves Bowen Born as the primary ball handler for the time being and we'll have to get some minutes from walk on Evan Gauger. So, this pretty much eliminates UNI from the title contention. Probably still have enough with Phyfe and Berhow to finish in the top half but this thing is now Loyola's and Bradley's to battle over.

This seems to be waiving the white flag a little too early...but definitely a gut punch. Also, I don't know why you wouldn't include Drake as one of the favorites after their promising start.

Agreed on the premature concession speech. With this blow to their depth it wouldn't surprise me to see UNI get back to a slower pace and the emphasis on defense that made them who they are. They'll still be good.

I think Drake, Bradley, Loyola and still probably UNI will make up the top four. With what Loyola has coming back, they may be a step ahead of the rest but I haven't seen them play yet so can't say for sure.

First, I hope he's okay and makes a comeback. Second, this year sucks for UNI. Third, unless he goes pro I hope he gets another year since he only played three games. As a redbird fan I'm jaded with this though because Bryson didnt get one even though he played one half. But, that was 20 years ago so he should be good.

Don't think we'll know about Drake until conference;just not a quality game on the schedule to judge by. Kansas State was a nice win, but still that's probably the worst team in the Big 12. On the positive, they should enter conference undefeated and that should have them feeling confident and on a role. People overlooking Indiana State as probably the next best team behind Bradley, UNI, and Loyola, but I get that because i don't have great confidence in Lansing.

Didn't mean to leave Drake out. The Dogs are well coached and look real solid.

It's a different story for me if Kimmons wasn't also going to be gone for a while. We're down to a true freshman combo guard and a RS Freshman walk on combo guard to run the team. We're going to play through Phyfe a ton but not having that command ball handler is going to be a real problem with some of the defenses you run into in this league.

Also, to answer above, this year doesn't count for anybody so AJ will technically get it back but I can't imagine he stays for a 5th year assuming everything goes well with his rehab and he's the old AJ next year.

This totally explains why he looked a step slow and couldn't turn the corner at all last weekend.

Cooper Kaifes was out all last season with the same injury, I’m curious to see how he recovered and if he’s back to his old self.

That sucks, but I can say from firsthand experience that the surgery is 100% worth it. The pain from that injury is extremely bad, and it can severely limit your mobility. It's a tough recovery, but he'll get back and be a much stronger player.

Word out today that AJ is going to have a second surgery tomorrow on the other (right) hip. Not the exact same surgery (there is no fracture in this one like the other one). He left for Colorado yesterday and the procedure is tomorrow.

Restarts his 6 month timeline for any contact or basketball related activity. He will miss all of the spring evaluation period and most of the offseason. Reasonable expectation that he'll be full go by September 1.
