I agree with what has been stated before that neither New Mexico nor Grand Canyon are an option anymore with the WAC stabilizing and adding some basketball quality. SFA and Abeline Christian are nothing to sneeze at from a basketball prospective and will add to what already looks like a solid top of the conference of NMSU GCU Cal Baptist and Utah Valley. There's really no point in them jumping to a more far flung conference. The irony is that the very thing that some say killed the original WAC (expansion into Texas) has saved it now.
Another thing I think we can all agree on is that Murray and Belmont is the number one option and as we (most likely) know would have already been a done deal if both schools were willing to jump in 2017. I'd still take them both if they are willing nowadays and I think it would work out well for both the schools and the conference.
That said the impetus and urgency to expand has lessened significantly with the MVC getting multiple bids this past season with both teams winning a game and having a real chance to do it again. If we're going to do it we need to be sure that it will add to our chances of getting multiple bids. A couple years ago I thought SDSU was such a program but I took the presence of player like Mike Daum as emblematic of a program that was truly ascending to greater heights rather than just being a generational mid major star for their program which appears to be the case. This leaves me less interested in the Dakotas right now.
NKU is all potential but hasn't shown enough. Wright State appears to be more of a known quantity and has great baseball which is a plus for this league but has well documented financial issues. They spend to MVC levels but with their financial issues adding significantly to travel costs which an MVC move would do for them would likely hurt their competitiveness significantly. I'm leery of adding either of them even though they could possibly add a lot. I need to see more from NKU and a rosier financial picture from Wright State to consider pulling the trigger there.
Outside of the Murray Belmont option I don't see a realistic option that feels like the right fit at the right time. I don't like the idea of UT-Arlington as I have stated even if I overestimated the degree to which UT controls them because they simply lack the tradition to make the conference better. One option that is gaining steam in my mind if Belmont truly is and remains the stick in the mud for expansion is Murray State and Oral Roberts. Oral Roberts is coming off a deep tournament run is investing in its facilities its history of success in March is on par with or better than many MVC schools it restores the presence of the MVC in Tulsa has great baseball is private (assuming that matters) and gives Missouri State a travel partner while setting up great travel partner pairings:
Drake UNI
Loyola Valpo
Bradley ISUr
ISUb Evansville
SIU Murray State
Missouri State ORU
That said two potential knocks here are academics and perhaps a desire to see more than one great run in the past 20 years before making a determination. If ORU can make some noise again or become a perennial contender\winner in the Summit they could play themselves into consideration for Belmont's spot. Outside of this I don't know if there are any expansion options that make sense for the conference at this time. I think it's a three team race for two spots unless something changes.
