Curious who the other two are, or who you are leaving out.

I'm very high on Bryan Mullins and think he has a terrific career ahead of him, but in fairness, as a very young coach, he's still in prove-it mode. His first year at Southern they overachieved with a very limited roster. Last year wasn't good but there were multiple key injuries, COVID weirdness, etc. IMO, Year 3 ahead is the first one in which he has had a couple recruiting classes to build with and has a deeper, more competitive roster with which to see what he can really do (albeit in a tough year around the conference).

It's very hard to argue with what DeVries has done in a short time at Drake. Pretty remarkable ... guessing he'd go #1 in a lot of people's fantasy MVC coaches draft. Jacobson has a very strong body of work (with a few down years), but I'd say the Iowa duo is at the top of my list. Yes, Wardle rebuilt Bradley and won twice in STL, but he hasn't put a great regular season together and last year was a regression, so to me he's clearly behind the other two. Elsewhere around the league it's a lot of question marks with some newer coaches and/or coaches who are or should be on the ropes, or still have much to prove.

With Porter gone, there isn't a clear one. I agree that the Iowa duo is definitely top two right now, with a slight edge to DeVries.

After that, I'd plug in Wardle given what he's did a few years ago. He seems to be regressing a bit.

Then Mullins and Dana Ford. Dana Ford has proven to be a great recruiter but needs to get it done on the court. Mullins overachieved year one and has some talent on his roster--needs to make another jump this year.

Then Lottich...whose time may be running short at at Valpo if he can't make some noise soon. Too much roster turnover.

Then Lickliter...who is what he is.

Then Muller.

TBD on Valentine and Schertz.

I pretty much agree up and down the line with Lickliter being a mutual question mark. I never know where to put him while I hate playing his teams.

Looks to me that Lottich finally has the players that his concept of offense require. Can he win with the upgraded talent and if so can he retain them? He could move several spots up my coaching ability chart with a strong season or fall clear to its bottom. TBD

Well, DeVries at Drake, and Jacobson at UNI, would be my other two. I just like their approach to the game, and the way they set their teams up to win. They might not always have the players to win every game, but they are always a tough out. Same with Mullins. Of course this is just my humble opinion, and you are free to agree, or disagree.

P.S. Lickliter isn't too far behind those three either as last years 5th place finish with a lineup that wouldn't put a lot of fear in most teams. It's what you do with what you got that counts.

Sounds like SIU non conference schedule will be completed sometime next week per Saluki ticket office. Season tickets to be sent mid October.

Obviously, I speak with an admitted bias, but I don't see how anyone could have expected anymore than what Todd Lickliter got out his team from last season. He inherited a train wreck from the very beginning, and restored stability to a program that badly needed it - on and off the court.

The MVC has always had great coaches. Top guy right now, far and away, is Darian DeVries. Drake made two home run hires in their head coaches back to back. Ben Jacobson has been outstanding at Northern Iowa. If I were to name my third guy, if would be Brian Wardle - he took over when Bradley had been floundering under Geno Howard. Wardle literally tore the team apart and in just several years built the program back.

UNI adds a home game with Vermont on 11/11.

Now, UNI has played some really tough schedules in the past but I'm not sure any have been this crazy.

Still up to 3 left to announce. My hunch is that they'll play 2 non-DIs and stop at 30 but Jake also isn't going to turn down another quality game if he can find one.

This should be a Top 10-15 non-conference schedule nationally.

Just saw this and thought it relevant to this post. Just one guy's opinion I suppose.

That's embarrassingly bad. Two non D1's and Alcorn State on the home schedule?

Then coaches complain fans don't come to games anymore.
