C-USA, is it worth it?

Postby jsaluki080 » October 30th, 2021, 12:30 pm

As we all know, there has been talk of MoSt joining C-USA for FBS football. I personally would like them to stay but would sincerely wish them the best (unlike the shockers) if they did make the jump.
However, upon hearing the most recent news of Marshal leaving, and talks of the MAC being interesting in WKU and MTSU, I honestly believe it would be a mistake for MoSt to join such an unstable, volatile, and weakened conference. .. or am I missing something (quite possible)?

It's still worth it from a future perspective. Go up there make a name for yourself and you never know.

To me it's only worth it if you can compete for a national championship. As of right now you can't unless you are in a BCS conference so it's not worth it.

I don't get that. You can't just expect to be a ceo right out of college. A decent fcs team is not going to the sec. Doesn't work like that

Not trying to throw cold water on what you are saying because it makes sense, but who was the last former FCS / 1-AA team to make it all of the way to the current Power 5? I can't think of one off of the top of my head. That is the biggest problem.....

There is 1 but it actually reinforces your point. The 1 exception is a school with 72k students in a top-25 MSA with only 1 major sports team (Magic) as direct market competition — and it came after 3 NY6 bowls.

(1970) Florida Tech Citronauts -> Florida Tech Knights
(1978) Florida Tech Knights -> UCF Knights
(1979) UCF Knights football starts as DIII program
(1982) Moves up to DII
(1990) Moves up to DI-AA
(1996) Moves up to DI-A
(2002) FB-only member of MAC
(2005) Joins CUSA
(2013) Joins AAC — Wins Fiesta Bowl
(2017) Wins Peach Bowl
(2018) Loses Fiesta Bowl
(2023) Joins Big XII — ascending from DIII to P5 in 44 years, and DI-AA to P5 in 28 years

UCF is the only one of 69 P5 programs to climb the ladder from DI-AA, and it took a confluence of extraordinary intrinsic factors (72k enrollment, top-25 MSA with sports dollar void) in conjunction with catching lightning in a bottle (3 NY6 bowls).

Matt Brown Tweeted a couple days ago that MSU and the CUSA were no longer in discussions. He was also told that MSU was the ones to end the discussions. Sounds like MSU is staying in the MVC for a little while longer.

I think our Administration feels they are in a very good position to be ready but discerning; in the meantime using the idea to continue to fund raise for the football facility upgrades necessary. They released a rendering of what the south endzone enclosure might look like and contain this week. I'm glad we're on hold , as it doesn't change anything but keeps us from making perhaps a bad impulsive move. I keep in mind Prez Smart is heading the MVC expansion committee , so who knows what his overall vision is if the MVC can continue to advance it's own product. I still personally think , and it may be years away, that G-5 FBS and top level FCS become one level because of the huge gap between G-5 and P-5 in spending and resources. For many schools that gap is close to a 100 million a year in budgets. Regardless, it's clear realignment will continue to make for some wild rumors and weird bedfellows in the coming years.

Clearly "Prez Smart" should be removed as head of the MVC expansion committee as he clearly is not concerned with the long term future of the Valley. Should be someone who is not looking to jump ship asap.

Yeah getting Belmont showed how disinterested & terrible he is as the committee chair. You clearly have a better handle on things than him , lmao. Perhaps you should find something real to whine about. :Bam:
