DEC 13, 1977 A day we cried

Postby acecard1 » December 13th, 2021, 11:32 am

It was a cold, foggy, rainy December day in Evansville 44 years ago today. We had just settled down from an early supper, when we heard that the Aces plane carrying the Aces basketball team had gone down trying to make it back to the airport. I don't cry much, but I did that night, and I will never forget it.

Glad I wasn't alive yet for Wichita State, Marshall, and Evansville. The OK State men's basketball plane crash effected me. Then the women's plane went down, too.

I remember when the news broke. I grew up in western Kentucky just south of Evansville ad we received Evansville television stations. My step father and I would usually attend 1 or 2 Evansville games per season and a couple of UK games as well. It was a really sad time for me as a 12 year old hearing the names of the deceased. Not that I knew them personally but I knew who they were.

Very, very sad day. My wife taught one of the players in high school. It is awful when young people die before they have really had a chance to live.
