There is a certain amount of risk no matter which way the conference decides to expand and even more if they decide not to expand. I think the smart thing is to hedge your bets and add some combination of both schools with basketball success (Belmont and Murray) and add schools in large markets (UIC, UTA, KC, Belmont again).

No reason to thinks that Murray and Belmont won't be able to compete. No reason to think that the 1-3 large market schools won't be able to compete 5-10 year down the road.

This is a reasonable take. The only issue I would have is that the “big market” schools have been in the big market all along. If they haven’t had success as of yet, will a conference change alone fix that? I think that’s why the early reports of requiring increased investment for certain programs made sense.

Turning out alums
Putting Butts in seats

Thats what helps enrollment.

If you don't win, your games might as well be in Antartica.

Perhaps what we are seeing is presidents who don't want to invest in giving their programs what they need to win and instead are trying to find a shortcut.

There is quite a bit of truth to this, particularly your comment about looking for shortcuts. The big-city fundraising events BC Panther referenced will be very lightly attended if the conference sinks deeper into mediocrity. I know I'd be more inclined to attend road games, the conference tournament, etc. (and the related alumni events) if there is a worthwhile basketball product that brings me out.

Grand Forks has an excellent holiday in express with free continental breakfast this time of year.

Evansville, Butler and Loyola did not want to be in a league with Wright State and Green Bay. If we add a bunch of crap teams it will just result in more and faster defections. We ate not going to get students from Texas by adding a low level basketball program.

As a fan of ISUr I hope we add all the crap teams and it dissolves then. Force the administration to pick a direction.

I think this is the plan that the ASun is using. They poached mediocre programs from the OVC, got them to join the ASun, and they have already seen one of the teams leave 10 or so months later.

I agree. For me, adding Omaha, UMKC, and maybe UTA would finally push me to want ISU to go to the FBS (just because there are no other real FCS conference options)

I don't know, I guess I am just not smart enough to understand how a high school senior in Dallas wakes up thinking they would like to attend a MVC school, because he/she knows somewhere in Arlington there is a school, whose names escapes them, is a member of that league. Understand, I know there is a rational in looking at UTA, but I just don't get it. Further, how much does the "Missouri Valley Conference" brand actually mean? That is not a slam at all on a league that I love. Do you really have to have a team in Texas to recruit there students - how much does that really help??? I remember when I was graduating from high school in Evansville IN in the late 70's I was considering SIU and ISU-blue...they were close by and I heard of them and liked them both. They being in the MVC was of no consequence to me at all. I ended up staying at home.

It just seems if we as a league want name recognition I don't know of any better way than getting multiple teams in the NCAA tournament. You make money, play before a national audience, and we are all happy. Holding out on Murray State is just plain stupid....lots of Evansville kids attend there by the way. The Racers move the basketball needle, we all know that. Yeah, there are other considerations. But they have proven themselves on and off the court. I do understand the need for a Chicago presence, and I am fine with UIC coming on board. A new beginning with a school that has money can maybe change there fortunes.

I do like the earlier post about a mix of good basketball programs and playing in a viable market. Obviously there has to be a balance in all of this. Yes, college attendance for most places is going down and populations are trending up down south. Agree or disagree, I still think the smartest strategy in bringing in revenue is making the MVC the best mid-major basketball conference in the country - that is my goal for this league.
