Haha! That's good stuff by Dan. He understands the coaching game and he'll move on. The timing makes me think they already have a candidate lined up and just starting the 30 day clock.

The whole coach's show last night was really good. Muller was speaking freely, acknowledging that he caught some tough breaks over the last 4 years (buzzer beaters, covid, injuries, opt-outs, etc) but was accountable that he did not do what he needed to do. Other programs navigated it just fine.

All in all, I think Redbird fans are appreciative of what Muller gave over the last decade. Ten years is a long time to be in a place. I think in 5 years or so when the Birds invite him back to campus for the 10 year anniversary of the 17-1 team, he'll receive a warm reception.

Everyone wishes he could've had more success, but a change had to be made. If I'm him, I take a year off just because I can. He'll land on a P5 bench somewhere. I'm sure he still has some SEC connections. Heck, who knows. If a spot ends up open on the UIC, MoSt, FIU, or Tenn State bench he could end up there as well.

10 years is a LONG time at a non P6. Really long time. Guys have usually either moved up or been fired by that time. Coach Jake is for sure an exception.

Dan is going to land on his feet. He seems to be really well liked, he's a good recruiter and has been around long enough to be a real asset to a program somewhere.

He's also definitely young enough to get another run as a head coach.

Being fired from ISU while young worked out well for Porter. I think Muller should go get an assistant job somewhere under a well-respected, established coach. Soak up every ounce of knowledge that he can and make another run at head coach somewhere.

A lot of us have cited the Moser example. I could see Muller having a similar return to the game. He'll be a HC again some day. I'm not sure he'll lead a team to the final four, but he'll be successful.

Despite 10 years as a head coach, I think part of what did him in is lack of experience. He has spent a ton of time around the game- 4 years as a player, 11 as an assistant and now 10 as a HC. However, 15 of those 25 years he was learning under the same guy, Kevin Stallings, who is now out of the game. Muller needs to see and learn something different. He needs to learn to coach in 2022 and not 1998. Players are just different now. They respond to criticism and praise differently and learn differently as well.

I'm excited for the future of Redbird basketball.

Instead of firing Dan, Kyle Brennan should have traded him to Gonzaga for Roger Powell Jr.
ISU gets the Head Coach they want and Dan gets some coaching experience from Mark Few!

Counterpoint, if Dan repeats the same path as Porter (I don't think it's likely but who knows) doesn't it point to the problem being Illinois State?

ISUR should hire a coach who has run his own program. Too much risk in an assistant who has never been a head coach.
