He's also definitely young enough to get another run as a head coach.

Being fired from ISU while young worked out well for Porter. I think Muller should go get an assistant job somewhere under a well-respected, established coach. Soak up every ounce of knowledge that he can and make another run at head coach somewhere.

This what was comes to mind for me too. He will be fine. It was just time.

A lot of us have cited the Moser example. I could see Muller having a similar return to the game. He'll be a HC again some day. I'm not sure he'll lead a team to the final four, but he'll be successful.

Despite 10 years as a head coach, I think part of what did him in is lack of experience. He has spent a ton of time around the game- 4 years as a player, 11 as an assistant and now 10 as a HC. However, 15 of those 25 years he was learning under the same guy, Kevin Stallings, who is now out of the game. Muller needs to see and learn something different. He needs to learn to coach in 2022 and not 1998. Players are just different now. They respond to criticism and praise differently and learn differently as well.

I'm excited for the future of Redbird basketball.

Counterpoint, if Dan repeats the same path as Porter (I don't think it's likely but who knows) doesn't it point to the problem being Illinois State?

You can scratch off Dennis Gates. That isn't happening.

I'd hire Prohm.

He's a bit of a weirdo but down deep I think he's a pretty good coach.

He just flat had some bad luck at Iowa State and probably let the Morris/Niang/Nader/Thomas group coach themselves too much and didn't do enough to put his stamp on the program right away but that won't be a problem with a rebuild.

Had Horton-Tucker stayed one more year and Lindell Wigginton not had people in his ear giving him terrible advice, he'd still be at Iowa State and doing pretty well.

Agree that Gates isn't happening.

The concensus is Roger Powell Jr. I'm not thrilled about it but not my call.

I would hire Prohm as well. I'm bullish on hiring a guy who has been a head coach before. Just my personal preference.

Prohm would be a great fit for the Redbirds. He seemed to be well liked by the community in Ames, and the wheels just kind of fell off for reasons that weren't totally his fault.

ISU didn't work out for McDermott, but he's been very successful at Creighton in the years after. Similar deal here in my opinion.

Steve Prohm coached 2 top-25 teams 3 years apart at Murray St. He’s a home run hire for any MVC school.
