Why should they be held to a different standard than any other student on campus?

What's tough about the transfer portal in a league like the MVC is we have a lot of guys who were ignored for whatever reason by the P6 as High Schoolers but could absolutely play on P6 rosters by the time they are upperclassmen. Finding those guys as Freshmen and developing them over 4+ years is the bread and butter of mid-major programs. You invest in those guys, they learn the playbook and coaching style, they gel with their teammates and you have something special by the time they are upperclassmen.

Now these guys can just plug and play at P6 schools once their stock gets hot. The counterargument to that is you have MVC level guys playing at P6 or low-majors, so we also benefit from the portal and can go after those guys. But as a league, it's unlikely we're going to land P6 level guys from the transfer portal at the same rate of those who are leaving. The scale tips in the favor of the P6 schools in a big way.

Whether it is the player's right is a completely separate issue that deserves it's own discussion. Just pointing out how I think it negatively impacts a league like ours from a basketball quality standpoint.

While I'm for freedom of movement , they aren't like any other student on campus. I think the thing that ought to be looked at is making them responsible for repayment of their scholarship if they transfer before graduating . Companies do that all the time, they pay for your education, but you owe them a certain amount of service time or you have to pay it back. Why should a school pay for their training just so that someone else benefits from it before they get equal value for $$$ spent. Simple, fair, and would make these decisions a lot less impulsive and knee jerk. Whether the accepting university or the player themselves pays with new NIL $$$, the point is, the school who invested time and dollars in developing a player isn't left w/o something for their investment.

I don't totally disagree but then you get into that gray area as to whether they are employees or students and it gets messy.

We'll have to see what the new DI governance structure looks like. Hopefully, there's some clarity there.

Good luck getting any thing close to "clarity" from anything the D1 Government lately

Because they're "student athletes" and getting a free ride for 4/5 years.

Scholarships are on a year to year basis. Technically, at the end of the academic school year, the player is an "unrestricted free agent". They've done their required service and are free to move on. It's no different than a coach not renewing a scholly for the upcoming season, thus "running a player off".

What about the kids on academic scholarships or art scholarships or music scholarships? Should they be unable to transfer as well because they're on 'free rides'?

Look, I don't love it either but unless you want these kids to be employees (which opens up a whole other can of worms), this is what it is.
