Seeing some of this discussion makes me wonder if this unfairly punishes the Service Academies. I will be honest I am not 100% sure how the football/basketball players are recruited or treated at SAs, but I do know the Olympic and other minor sports are often extracurriculars (non scholly) for students who “Enlist” in the SA.

I have a good friend who went to West Point who was on the boxing team his Jr/Sr year. The deal at West Point is you sign up and get paid a nominal amount to attend. School is covered so long as you complete and then spend 5 years on active duty. He had the option to leave or not complete his service, but if he did he would have owed the US Government a STUPID amount of money for his education. I assume since “scholarships” don’t exist at SAs a transfer would have to pay back the Government for how much time they spent there, meaning it’s going to be EVEN HARDER to get kids to commit to SAs.

I think that might go both ways though. It may be harder to get kids to commit, but it probably means they are a lot more likely to stay once they get there.

SA’s have always been behind the 8 ball when it comes to transfers. Kids can transfer out 2 or 3 yrs in and go someplace easier (completely upending the fr/so/jr/sr balance); but they have never had the ability to bring in Juco or other 4 yr transfers to offset any transfers out. Hence many SA’s being young teams, which don’t work very well.
It’s special if a SA has a good team.

Kwiesinski played mop-up minutes in 2020-21 and redshirted this season. He was never going to see meaningful minutes at Drake. I expect he'll wind up at a D2 school. Good kid, and I wish him well. Maybe he'll join his twin brother at St Thomas?

Added. What’s the word on Filewich? Coming in he was touted as the second coming of Cam Krutwig. I didn’t pay a lot of attention to SIU this year but it seemed his minutes got cut?

Kyler's minutes went down significantly this year with JD healthy. Kyler was very one-dimensional. He could bully you down low but any athletic center could easily block his shots. His defense and athleticism really hindered his minutes this year.

With JD coming back, highly-touted redshirt freshman Ebube ready to go next year, an incoming freshman center, and the fact that Mullins prefers to go small often, it makes sense for Kyler to pursue more playing time.

I'm not familiar with exactly how it works for SA's but I did have a HS friend that went to West Point on a full ride scholarship for football. He served in the army for five years afterwards. So I had just assumed serving in the military afterwards was required.
