CBB Free Agency

Many of us hoped the transfer portal would calm down a bit once the COVID years of eligibility expired in a couple years. Unfortunately, it looks like college basketball free agency is here to stay. Players will be allowed to transfer multiple times without sitting out as long players submit notice within certain dates. Seems like the new norm is going to be 3 schools in 4 years.

Gotta make sure the P6 has every advantage. Nearly every advantage wasn't quite good enough.

Why don't fans give players the benefit of the doubt and think many, actually most, will stay at their original school for their entire eligibility?

Again - if you win and you treat your players well your program will be fine. That's the bottom line.

There is zero logical reason why any player should have to sit out if they transfer schools.

I'd say most fans are jaded, especially at the MVC level, having been burned time and time again from the portal.

Then again, a kid will make a "commitment" announcement and I would hyperbolically say 95% of them include "I am 100% committed to ______ University." That 100% commitment lasts what? 8 months?

I think a lot of people miss the way things used to be. You'd bring in a freshman class and get to see them grow over their four years. This is how fans connected with teams and fan bases grow. Fond memories of Dinma Odiakosa who looked like a baby giraffe his freshman season to becoming one of the top bigs in the league his senior year. Paris Lee, who went from losing by 40 with 9 turnovers at VCU his freshman season to a conference championship and POY his senior year.

I'm speaking from a very fan-forward perspective here. When someone says the are committed, I expect some actual level of commitment. In the professional world, if I see a resume with a person who's changed companies three times in four years, I'd be hesitant to trust and invest in that person.

Because the transfer portal has put like something like 3,000 names through it in the past two years.

And WAY more than half of those dudes were players the coaching staff and fans couldn't wait to get rid of.

If Bradley fans don't want Terry Roberts to leave they also have to be cool with four seasons of Armon Brummett and Antonio Thomas.

I totally understand why fans like the "old days". I get it. 100%.

I just think fans only see the times the portal "hurts" their team. The large majority of guys in the portal are crappy players. A lot of crappy players. If we want commitment from the good players we have to be willing to commit to the D2 level players who happen to be on scholarship at our favorite MVC school. It's a two way street.

At the Valley level the portal mostly hurts our teams. Power 5 teams are using us a farm system. "Go to the Valley and if you put up numbers we'll call you up if we need you."

"Way more than half" is pretty subjective. I don't think a majority of these players entering the portal are getting "run off" vs leaving willingly. I get your point though.

Bc in order to be good, Coaches have to push their players to be better than they are when they walk on campus . Some people enjoy the process of being coached past their limits, most say they do, but don’t.

“Treating your players well” is subjective at best.
