MVC Transfers 2022

Any UIC fans out there (at all?) know what's going on? Did Yak tell him to hit the road or is there a P6 in his ear that had a last minute spot to fill? Either way, I find it hard that he plays when the ball tips in about 10 weeks.

The portal is right for college basketball, but it needs to limited in time. It should open from the end of your team's regular season and close May 1. It can then open again for about 10 days in July as players see who is coming to their team. Then, it can open again from the end of the 1st semester until the start of the 2nd semester. However, any player transferring during the winter cannot play again until the next fall.

A player can leave a D-1 team at anytime still, but they can't join the portal until it opens. At least in my perfect world this is how it would work.

Damaria is tremendously talented and I’d rather have him than not (and I think Yak would too), but he is extremely sloppy/undisciplined and was a TO machine last year, which I know had to frustrate Yak.

No idea what happened. Maybe left because Dee Brown left? He also did try the NBA thing before coming back, so maybe someone is in his ear telling him he needs to show something on a bigger stage to improve his stock.

Whatever happens, I agree the portal needs to be more time-restrictive. UIC was entering its first year in the MVC in decent shape. Two late transfers (Tyler Stevenson to Mississippi St, and now Damaria) just can’t be reasonably replaced so close to the season. Stevenson’s replacement is a 6’10” freshman project…no way he’s going to be as productive as Stevenson. Similarly, there’s no way to replace last year’s leading scorer and rebounder (Damaria).

Reduce portal time. Otherwise, there needs to be some penalty to player/destination school and/or compensation to the source school when transfers happen this late.

I think we can kiss any penalty to players goodbye going forward. Sitting out this semester seems appropriate as light a punishment as that seems, assuming he can get in somewhere and enroll quickly. A midseason transfer is the best UIC can hope for anyway and it’s slim pickings.

Always a solution to this - but, again - the coaches and schools don't want it.

Franklin is headed to Memphis. If college tampering was a thing that was paid attention to, this seems like something that would be looked in to.
