Gregg Marshall

There is a strong feeling in Illinois that Bruce Weber is in his final days. One of the possible rumored replacement candidates is Greg Marshall.

Do you think he would make a move? Seems to me as an outsider looking in from a couple states away that he has a really good gig going at WSU.

I think Gregg will consider any BCS school that is willing to offer. OTOH, he already makes about 1.5 million, takes chartered flights, has a son in HS and another in middle school. He has his best ever recruiting class coming in and he is loved.

If the S. Carolina job comes open, it will be interesting. Other than that, I think he will look for a job in which the current coach moved up. I don't know that he wants to rebuild. We will have to see, but last year he turned down 1.9 milliono from NC State to stay in Wichita.

"How many hamburgers can a man eat?" Marshall asks.

Who knows. He is going to be mentioned for virtually EVERY job that comes open or could come open. What happens, happens. Wichita State is in good position to hire another good coach should the need come open. Nothing I can do either way so I am just going to enjoy the ride.

Shox are in a good position to hire another up & comer if necessary. money, success, nice facilities. Admin staff that appear to understand high midmajor BB. Wish drake had a couple of these assets!

I think the thing that gets overlooked the most when people look at these situations is opportunity. WSU can match money, fan base, resources, almost everything you can name except opportunity. What I mean by that is in the end Marshall and every Valley coach knows that if they are coaching in a power conference and are just reasonably good, they will have the opportunity every year to be in the NCAA tourney and in the hunt for a deep run. And conversley they know they can be a very very good Valley team and not get a sniff. When everything is said and done , I think that is the major factor in many decisions of coaches at high level non BCS schools.

Remember, this is the guy that answered a question with this (paraphrasing):

Mid-major? Look at my checking account, is that mid-major? Look at my paycheck, is that mid-major? Look at my facilities, fan support and my talent. Is that mid-major?

I think that Marshall is very happy @ WSU and in Wichita. It is one of the better if not the best job in the MVC. The coach's and players have all of the benefits of most BCS programs. Mens' BB is the premier sport in the city. WSU is a great job.

IMO, if Marshall stays, WSU will be viewed like Butler, Gonzaga, and the other top non BCS. The media doesn't call those programs mid major anymore.

I would be mildly suprised if he were to leave and I would be shocked if he went to Illinois. He said last year that it would take an unbeleivable offer...I guess $2,000,000, upper half ACC school, close to home, a storied program that won a national championship in the modern era, and did I mention $2,000,000, isn't unbeleivable. The stars were lined up last season and he didn't jump.

Marshall isn't like a lot of the coach's who go thru the MVC. Most of those guys come in looking at the MVC as a stepping stone and jump at the first BCS offer they get (see ZO). He didn't jump easily at Winthrop either. DA stayed at Creighton for a long time and it took an "unbeleivable" offer to get him to go. I would like to think Marshall has similar loyalty.

If and I mean IF he leaves, I highly doubt that he goes anywhere that would have a colder climate than Wichita. That would be a strike against Illinios.

Also, BW has not been a total failure @ Illinois. Expectations are very high there and they are not an elite program like KY, Duke, KU, NC etc. Strike 2

BW came from the MVC....do you think they want to go down that road again ? Strike 3

Then again.......he could go to Illinois. :Bam:

I think Weber's done at the end of the year. That fanbase thinks they are an elite blueblood program and although they had a run in the middle of the decade, they've slipped quite a bit to a perennial bubble team the last couple seasons.

Something to watch for is that a couple members of the Board of Trustees were not pleased when the football coach was hired. Illinois has never had a minority head coach in men's basketball or football and that may play a role in who they look at to replace Weber.

Marshall seems to be happy at WSU so I don't see him jumping just to jump. I think he understands that just because a BCS school comes calling, doesn't mean it's a better job.

He won't go to Illinois and you can bank on that.
