Echenique as the defensive player of the year? I think this is comical considering how bad defensively Creighton is as a team. The defensive player of the year should come from one of the best defenses in the league. According to KENPOM Creighton ranks 8 out of 10 in defensive efficiency as a team in the Valley and 190th out of 345 D1 teams. Shouldn't the defensive player of the year come from a team that plays a little defense?

I guess if you are the defensive leader of the 190th ranked basketball team in Defense in the country that makes you Defensive Valley Player of the Year?

I disagree, but you're right that SN might be a bit biased.

except Kenpom is not biased.

Our poor defense comes from our guards and wings. Echenique shut down every big man he faced this year. I can't recall on big man who had a great game against us this year (including Stutz twice). We never have to double team anyone's big man cause GE can handle him one on one. I can remember ALOT of guards though who had career nights against us.

I'd have to go GE for DPOY as well.

UNI struggled in the post this year, but GE was the only defender to "shut down" the post of UNI...Held Tuttle under his season shooting % of 66%ish...

5-8 and 13 points and 2-4 for 5 points were Tuttle's lines against CU. Not bad but not exactly dominating.

Those games were "as bad" as I saw Tuttle this year.

Tuttle will be very very special.

I still have to go with GE. No other defender had the impact he did. It isn't his fault the rest of his team can't play D

Is he ranking individual defensive players nowadays?

Why is it that WSU fans can't seem to understand that the "P" in DPOY stands for "player." If it was a team award it would be DTOY....

Carl Hall didn't have too much trouble with GE in Wichita. Not saying that he doesn't deserve the award, but he hasn't shut down EVERY SINGLE player he has gone up against either. Don't think it's that black/white.

I've got a bit of a problem with a player on the 7th (in conference) or 8th (all games) ranked defensive team in the conference being the DPOY. If GE is the best defender in the league, but the team is among the worst, what does that say about the rest of the defenders for CU?

A couple of things.

I agree that 4 first team slots are locks....Ragland, Stutz, Ryan, and McD.

The fifth is a tough call. I think you could make a case for three guys. Carmichael, Rice, and Weems.
I think Weems might get it by name recognition and reputation, but hard to tell. Just curious how others are choosing between the three.

Second, obvious bias as CU fan but GE definitely warrants CONSIDERATION as DPOY even if CU's overall team defense hasn't been good. He is our best defender and probably the one player offenses have to work around consistently for the Jays. His rebounding numbers are good (not the best in conference but top 5) and he leads the conference in blocks. He is hard to move, yet agile for his position so he has been able to guard most posts one on one. I have seen quotes from several league coaches that talk about how much of a load he is. So I think you could look at his numbers and the skills for his position and say he is in the conversation as one of the best defenders in conference at his position.

WSU team defense is salty. I think you could make a case for most of the guys on the team,as defensive stars but hard to pick one standout. Ben Smith maybe? Who would you suggests as DPOY from WSU?

Who else....Carmichael?, Rice? Weems? Odum? I am having trouble coming up with a standout ballhawking guard that has been as consistent as Ahelegbe, Mullins . If not for his injuries I think Odum might have been that guy.

Why is it Creighton fans can't seem to understand the concept of defense and relativity?

If the DPOY isn't on WSU's team this season, then there is something wrong with the voting.
