How Many New Coaches Will We have in the MVC Next Year?

I think your percentage on Phelps is a little low, maybe 25-30%, and Jacobson is a little high, maybe 5%. Minnesota would have to be interesting to Jacobson, but any new coach would have to come in and sort of rebuild. That makes me think they would look elsewhere, but who knows.

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge, but what is the facination for the Minnesota job? Is he from there?

It may sound silly, but there is not much difference between northern Iowa and southern Minnesota.

It doesn't that is why I'm asking the question. Is Minnesota really that much of a basketball school? The only non-basketball BCS school that worries me for Marshall is South Carolina since he has admitted he has been a fan. I can't see him going to Illinois and Nebraska (which is a step down in my opinion)

He grew up in Mayville, ND (right on the ND/MN boarder) and played basketball at UND in Grand Forks, ND (again right on the ND/MN boarder). While it is northern Minnesota here is a ton of MN alumni/fans around the area. Something about being closer to home and being at a high level (NDSU and UND aren't high level, just moved D1 and not real good programs/conferences) seems like a perfect fit for a guy like Jake.



Minnesota's basketball fan base is rabid. They are B10 football but are apathetic towards that....on a good year. The basketball team though has a better following than the T'Wolves.

How is that so different from other coaches? Turgeon came back after his Sweet 16, only to leave a year later. Altman, kept coming back year after year (granted, he didn't have any sweet 16's, but did have plently of job offers).

The only two recent coaches that jumped as soon as they possible could were Keno Davis and Cuonzo Martin.

Jacobson didn't leave the year after his S16 either....I can't see him leaving after this year either given what UNI has coming back. If he doesn't leave in the next 2/3 years he will be at UNI for a very long time. I'm not saying it won't/can't happen, but he has turned down jobs that have offered over a million dollars. He seems very very very comfortable here.


If UNI has Jake as long as CU had Altman (16 years) we will be very happy and in a very good position.



Keno and Cuonzo also seem to have the money first/loyalty second mentality. Coaches like Jake, Altman, maybe even Marshall seem to have it the other way.

I admit that I had a hard time assigning a percentage to Phelps. Truth be told, I actually changed it more than once. Without a doubt, he and Lowery entered the season on the hottest seats. I think that Drake got better as the year went along and, but for Simons' mono, may have finished in third place all alone. Add to that the fact that I am not sure that Drake has the funds (or would be willing to spend them) to get rid of him right now, combined with the series of injuries (Van Deest, Uhlenhopp and Simons) and I came up with the percentage I assigned.

One other issue with Drake - if Phelps leaves, does Rice leave? If that is a legitimate risk, that alone may be worth giving Phelps another year to see how he does with a healthy team. One thing is for sure - dude can recruit!

I dont see South Carolina offering anything near 2.5M a season. I thought i read an article a few weeks ago in a south carolina/north carolina newspaper that talked about how marshall has a great set up in Wichita and that it would take a lot from South Carolina to pull him away. . . I'll see if i can find the article.

Minnesota also can boast one other thing - there are no other D1 programs within the state. In theory, that should provide a coach with a huge advantage in recruiting instate kids.

USC has a ton of SEC football money to throw around if it wants to.

If Marshall leaves though, I think it would be more about going home than about dollars. I thought it was interesting than when listing teams he would prefer to play in the bracketbusters, he had Davidson listed second as opposed to other schools with better RPIs.

Yep...and Jake has had GREAT success with Minnesota (and twin cities) kids.

Kwadzo, Eric Crawford, Eric Coleman, Travis Brown, and Marc are all from the Twin Cities.

If Gregg leaves, it will be ONLY about going home.

IF (big if) the Shocks win in St. Louis and get a game or 2 in the big dance, then the question will arise again and Gregg will be forced to make a tough decision.

Leave a program he's built and start again (for the 3rd time) or go home to what (I am assuming) is his dream job.

I doubt USC will pay him 2.5....that's big time money. Not saying they can't, just that they won't. He turned down close to 2 last season at a better school (basketball wise). He's also in about a 2 year window to make his next and, most likely, last coaching move. He's said publicly he doesn't want to coach forever.

If he has a run (at least 2nd round NCAAs) then I think he'll get a decent raise, an extension on his deal (8 years rollover?) and I think he'll choose to stay, but I won't be surprised to see him leave. I will be surprised if it's to a school not using USC as it's initials.
