Barry coached in an immeasurably better MVC that had 2-4 bids every single year. Cuonzo won his title in what was the worst year in the MVC in over a decade, and it also did not come with an NCAA bid. IMO, those MSU teams Barry had were better than MSU's 2011 team.

Barry is a pretty good human in non-basketball related things. His daughter is a terrific gal as well. He will be friendly to the locals if you bump into him at El Greco or Fat Patties if you see him. And you will. For a fun time ask him about the Tulsa Drillers and his experience at the old Bud's Supermarket across the way in Tulsa. Funny but not for the faint of heart. Good guy (non-basketball).
Unfortunately though after the next 7 months or so of running through Carbondale telling his gross Bud's story (still funny though) and patronizing the fine establishments in the area, he will eventually have to you know coach basketball. This is where the disappointment will begin because he is terribly, terribly, terribly awful at this. SIUC fans will want him to succeed because he is such a nice guy but they will be sorely disappointed in the product on the floor I am afraid. It will be tough because everyone wanted CLo to fail but you'll want this one to succeed because of his stories, his Oklahoma accent, his charm. I just don't see how he goes up to Chicago and starts landing studs when he struggled recruiting Springfield Kickapoo High. Anthony Tolliver. If maybe he could get a Sean Sutton/Eddie Sutton on his bench and combine it with a really good Chicagoland recruiter then maybe he will do better. Maybe.
I will applaud this man when he comes to our place next year. He deserves it. But I will applaud him from afar if that makes sense. Glad he is not my problem any more. Of course we replaced him with an energetic, good coach who could not wait to get the heck out of Springfield. And then replaced that man with a bright man who sits on the bench with a deer in the headlights look while wearing a sweater. And not even a particularly nice one. Barry doesn't seem so bad I guess. Still my lasting image of Barry through it all is a sad man sitting in his living room getting emotional in March of 2006 as he realizes that it just isn't happening. Blake Ahearn excusing himself to go be emotional elsewhere in the background. I think SIUC fans will enjoy the guy but will be left with the lasting image of a man coming up just short. Coffee is for closers but Barry drinks sweet tea from McAlister's instead. Just not quite there.
