I'll take a Zo coached 2011 team over a Hinson coached 2006 team

Barry coached in an immeasurably better MVC that had 2-4 bids every single year. Cuonzo won his title in what was the worst year in the MVC in over a decade, and it also did not come with an NCAA bid. IMO, those MSU teams Barry had were better than MSU's 2011 team.

Totally disagree. Some of the teams during the years Barry was here may have been deeper and possibly more physically talented. But the 2011 MSU team was far tougher. For that reason I'd take the 2011 team every time. I attribute that to Cuonzo. And that's the point.

SIU needed this hire. There is a thread on Salukitalk about this bringing class back to SIU, something we lacked for years. Barry will graduate young men that are better for having come to SIU and play for him.

I also think he could have more success than at MSU simply because I think he has more to work with. He didn't have the new arena at MSU which would have helped him. I think (though I could be wrong) that he will have a better recruiting budget at SIU than he had at MSU.

I am cautiously optimistic about the record he will have 9 year track record shows he was always close but could never get over the hump at MSU. ZO was able to because he was given more to work with. MSU is infinitely better positioned today than they were during Barry's tenure there. I also believe that SIU is. I hope this translates into wins.

Also, Mr. Self, please throw Barry a bone and recommend SIU to a player that doesn't quite cut it for you! :D

This hire is good for SIU and for the Valley.

I like Barry, he was always very complimentary of the Wichita State program. I got some of my best quotes from him after he left Koch Arena. Welcome back to the WVC (Wichita Valley Conference).

Aside from the win against Wisconsin during Barry's best year as a Bear, I can't recall many other significant wins against the top 3 teams in the conference. Generally speaking, his teams lacked the old mental toughness to them that could have propelled them over the top to be very successful.

I have taken a long time to interject my thoughts here because I wanted to be rational and not let emotion get the better of me. Barry is a pretty good human in non-basketball related things. His daughter is a terrific gal as well. He will be friendly to the locals if you bump into him at El Greco or Fat Patties if you see him. And you will. For a fun time ask him about the Tulsa Drillers and his experience at the old Bud's Supermarket across the way in Tulsa. Funny but not for the faint of heart. Good guy (non-basketball).

Unfortunately though after the next 7 months or so of running through Carbondale telling his gross Bud's story (still funny though) and patronizing the fine establishments in the area, he will eventually have to you know coach basketball. This is where the disappointment will begin because he is terribly, terribly, terribly awful at this. SIUC fans will want him to succeed because he is such a nice guy but they will be sorely disappointed in the product on the floor I am afraid. It will be tough because everyone wanted CLo to fail but you'll want this one to succeed because of his stories, his Oklahoma accent, his charm. I just don't see how he goes up to Chicago and starts landing studs when he struggled recruiting Springfield Kickapoo High. Anthony Tolliver. If maybe he could get a Sean Sutton/Eddie Sutton on his bench and combine it with a really good Chicagoland recruiter then maybe he will do better. Maybe.

I will applaud this man when he comes to our place next year. He deserves it. But I will applaud him from afar if that makes sense. Glad he is not my problem any more. Of course we replaced him with an energetic, good coach who could not wait to get the heck out of Springfield. And then replaced that man with a bright man who sits on the bench with a deer in the headlights look while wearing a sweater. And not even a particularly nice one. Barry doesn't seem so bad I guess. Still my lasting image of Barry through it all is a sad man sitting in his living room getting emotional in March of 2006 as he realizes that it just isn't happening. Blake Ahearn excusing himself to go be emotional elsewhere in the background. I think SIUC fans will enjoy the guy but will be left with the lasting image of a man coming up just short. Coffee is for closers but Barry drinks sweet tea from McAlister's instead. Just not quite there.

I agree with a lot of what you say Casey. BUT I just don't think Barry was that bad of a coach or recruiter while he was here? Besides being a personable guy as you point out - his won/loss record was pretty good. And we had some pretty good talent that he recruited (including Kyle Weems) during his tenure.

IMO he just wasn't a big game coach as evidenced by the fact that we hardly ever won them (big games). You can only let that go on so long if you are trying to build something.

But I truly hope he succeeds at SIU.
