Jarod Uthoff - possible transfer

A place to discuss tomorrow's MVC stars.

I still say Elgin should have stepped in and required he sit out a year before playing.

McDermott is the wound that will never heal for UNI fans. It's festering and it's sore, whenever we're forced to look at it (let alone touch it) it hurts like hell and we will probably lash out in defense. There's no getting over it, and there never will be until he graduates and his dad moves on. That's just the way it is and the way it's going to be.

Doug had already been on scholarship for two seasons, and they are taking it away just to pull in a high profile transfer. Its the fact that he would be doing this after the fact that I have a problem with. If he had chosen to do it from the beginning, fine. If he had done it to give another player already on the roster a scholarship, fine. But in this situation, he is literally buying another (good) player. To put it any other way is just semantic spin.

Its you that is letting your bias get in the way of the reality of what he is doing. Is it technically "illegal", no. But it is, in my opinion, most certainly "toeing the ethical line".

Honestly, I don't see what the difference is as to whether he did it Doug's freshman year or starts doing it now. I also don't see how it changes the "ethics" of the scenario. As you properly pointed out, it doesn't violate a single rule. As far as ethics, I'd say it is much more ethical to pay tuition for your son than to take a scholarship away from a player that is not your kid and tell that kid he now has to pay tuition (whether the kid is on board with it or not). (And no, I don't believe the whole idea was Pehl's...I suspect a coach or assistant probably placed the bug in his ear...)

As to the financial aspect of the deal, that is really between the McDermott's and Creighton. If CU doesn't mind supply Doug with a scholarship instead of making daddy pay tuition, I don't know why it is anybody else's concern.

After initially saying Wisconsin hadn't received Uthoff's appeal paperwork, they admit they misplaced it. You can't make some of this stuff up.

More BS..

You sure like to read into things and/or flat-out fabricate stories don't you? You have no freaking idea what went on with coach Jake and Austin Pehl. Despite that, even if it were true that Coach Jake were some evil bastard that forced a kid to relinquish a scholarship (puh-lease...), it would still be better than what Creighton is doing. Coaches get to choose what players they want on their teams. Unlike McD, Jake wouldn't be PAYING for the player that we brought in out of his own pocket.

But as you keep saying, "he's just paying his son's tuition". LOL, yeah right...

I've just been adding a "hrmpf!" to the end of all these UNI posts when I read them. Seems to put them all into the proper context.

It makes one wonder if Bo Ryan woke up a few days ago and thought:

"How can I make myself look like the biggest egomaniac in college basketball?"

This whole situation is making Wisconsin look very poor.
[Insert snappy comeback]

Is UNI interested in him? Yes. Do we currently have a scholarship? No. Might he be willing to pay his own way for a year? That is what I said and noted that if he does pay his own way, he might choose ISU first.

Look, if he is leaving Wisconsin because he wants a more uptempo style of play, he isn't going to UNI. That would be like a Las Vegas resident announcing that he wants to relocate because of the immense heat and then moving to Phoenix.

This may have been posted elsewhere but I didn't see it. Someone please provide the facts of the situation at UNI last year (?) where a parent paid the tuition of a BB player so that it would open up a scholarship for another athlete. Thanks.

Is it still 5 years to play 4?

He already redshirted, will have to sit for the transfer, he will only have 3 seasons to play.

I personally would go to JUCO and play this up coming year, still have 3 to play D1 and could stick it to Bo by going anywhere including a big 10 school if I wanted to.

I will bet good money that Uthoff ends up at Iowa State. There is waaaaay too much public pressure for Wisconsin to not back down at least a little bit.
