it does matter, keeping an all-freshman player is huge for us. It may not matter much in terms of wins next year but down the road this is big for siu

Setty met his 2.6 GPA to gain his release. However, with a catch. I'm not sure why it matters at this point.

The forward will be granted permission to talk to schools ‘close’ to his hometown of Maysville, Ky., Athletic Director Mario Moccia said Monday.

“Treg said he was homesick, and he wanted to get closer to home. So if all of a sudden, he wanted to go to California, that would be opposite of what he told us,” Moccia said. “We want to get him closer to home.”

Moccia said the Athletic Department will grant Setty a release to a school closer to his hometown, which is 370 miles away from Carbondale, but further discussions would be needed if he wanted to go to a school further away from Maysville, Ky.

Is there a difference between the GPA needed to gain a release and the GPA needed to be eligible to play? I'm not an expert on NCAA rules and regulations but I am curious

There is no minimum GPA set by the NCAA for obtaining a release. That was a restriction placed by the athletic department at SIU, likely to avoid penalties down the road.
