Conference Realignment - May 1

Discuss the MVC hoops season here.

Is Boise looking for a new home for hoops now that the WAC is in peril?

The Big West meets next week, and whether to expand again is an agenda item.
Don't expect tremendous movement.

And that could spell doom and gloom for Boise State basketball.

Boise State made a football decision earlier this year to join the Big East in 2013 and place all of its other sports in the WAC.

The Big West wasn't an option. The Big West gladly accepted San Diego State's application for the rest of its sports, highlighted by men's basketball, after the Aztecs joined the Broncos' football program in the Big East.

Boise St is literally screwed in about every possible way.

The WAC might die from lack of membership.

The Big Sky isn't interested; in fact, they're interested in Idaho because they could bring FCS football there. And with Idaho and Idaho St in tow, who needs the Boise market? Plus, they'd need another non-football program to balance with Boise, and they already have 13 members. They won't expand beyond 14. Big Sky is literally full and can't take Boise.

Big West already turned down Boise once.

WCC turned them down, and just added Pacific, so that means no room for Boise. In fact, Seattle/Denver combo platter is more likely there.

MWC obviously doesn't want them.

There is literally no conference in the western half of the US, outside of the Summit, who even has the capacity to take them. But guess what? That's a conference on the brink too because of a possible Horizon raid.

Boise St
South Dakota
South Dakota St
Utah Valley
North Dakota St
UMKC
Western Illinois
Southern Utah

That's the type of conference they're staring at in the face.

are you assuming IPFW, IUPUI, and Oakland all leave the Mid Con (Summit)? That group could also grab North Dakota from the Big Sky if UND ever gets their mascot issues resolved.

Southern Utah becomes a member of the Big Sky July 1, so you can take them off that list. Remove SUU and add UND and that actually isn't a bad looking conference IMO. But what to do with IPFW and IUPUI and Oakland, but I am guessing Oakland will take Butler's spot in the Horizon

It feels like to me that Oakland is destined to the Horizon, and I could actually see them go to 12 and add the Indiana schools. I'd be a bit worried about the facilities of the Indiana schools, though. One or both of the Indiana schools are needed to keep some semblance of the travel partner system they have set up right now.

North Dakota's nickname issue is caught up in the government now. As in, the government tried to pass a law that they had to keep their Fighting Sioux name. As in, the government tried to pass a law that forced UND to violate NCAA rules. That situation isn't going away anytime soon.

Boise State is apparently trying to get the Big East to strongarm some other conference to accept their olympic sports. From the Idaho Statesman:

That makes two A10 schools from Richmond. One with good academics and one with subpar academics. I thought the A10 was all hung up on that. Apparently not.

Anyhow it is time for anyone with a lifeboat to paddle away from the CAA. Sad to see it happen for some of those schools like William and Mary and James Madison.

VCU has subpar academics? They are ranked as a Tier 1 national University and bring in a boat load of research dollars.

VCU may not be Harvard but saying they have subpar academics is an ignorant comment.

Eh, everyone has their own standards I suppose. To each their own.

An interesting thing that I had noticed from SLU fans is that they seem to be championing Belmont to join the A10. That is not a school that we had discussed here in possible realignment for the Valley or at least that I remember. I like it. They wouldn't quite be ORU but Belmont is a good basketball school in a good city and finally a great academic institution. If I was Elgin I think I would be making phone calls to Nashville just to inquire.

What standards do you use to say that VCU has "sub par academics"?
