Having them as part of a league is far more than nice, it's a foundation.

That may be, but your prior comment was that Notre Dame was the "key piece" to the dreams of an all catholic conference. I can tell you that it certainly was not. Just as nobody expected Jesuit, Catholic Boston College to join an all Catholic league, nobody really expected Notre Dame to join one either. An all catholic league was always discussed as a basketball first league, which would naturally not be of interest to the FBS playing catholic schools who are football first.

As I said above, Notre Dame moving to the ACC does nothing to make an all catholic conference more or less likely.

If ND wanted that league to exist, it would exist by now. That's all anyone needs to know about what the key is/was. The ACC move does change things.

We obviously don't agree. Fine by me. But denying ND's position in the entire thing is silly.

I could make a pretty nice league picking 8-10 teams out of Big East, A10 and MVC.

With our president's comments about looking into restarting football in the future I wonder where we'll be and what the valley will be in a decade or so.

ND leaving is actually slightly bad for the other Catholics in the BEast. If they ever do split, they need a core group of teams already together to speed up the autobid process with the NCAA. UND is kind of a bridge to the Marquette/DePaul western outpost, and now there's only 7 teams that can break away together.

I think Louisville (threat to go B12) and UConn (threat to ACC) are more important to the long-term stability. Right now, UL, UConn, Cincy, Temple, and Memphis provide a better basketball backbone than their own conference with an added, say, Xavier, Dayton, and St Louis. Take away UL and UConn, and the Xavier/Dayton/StL/whoever package looks comparable to the Cincy/Temple/Memphis package.

To rebut your argument, a league with the teams mentioned would be a multi bid league and have no immediate need for an auto bid.

But all the schools play sports other than basketball. Sports that could use that autobid.

U of L, as of right now, is pretty dedicated to the Big East (along with pretty much everyone that is still left). The new TV deal they are working on is apparently going to be huge

Dedicated? If the Big 12 offered Louisville, they would jump in a second....

I'm not 100% convinced on that based on my interactions with U of L fans a couple weeks ago a the UL/UK game, or my family in the UL area who have been season ticket holders for 20 years...
