There's a new #1 in my weekly MVC Power Rankings, but otherwise not much change.

1) Wichita State - Gregg Marshall has reloaded and the Shockers have avoided early season struggles that often nip teams trying to acclimate multiple new players to their system. Cleanthony Early has lived up to the billing and is playing an an All-MVC level .

You're finally starting to get it right brother. Practice makes perfect! :D

I couldn't argue if you had flip flopped UNI and Drake.

I'm not predicting a conference title but I think Illinois State is good enough to beat Creighton and Wichita in conference play. We need to run the table the rest of the way in the OOC games now.

Of course they are, there is little doubt of that. As you pointed out, its important to get those "other" games. You have to think you will be able to win some games against CU, WSU, and UNI. But to make the tournament/get an at-large you have to win most non-conf games and just can't afford losses to the bottom of the conference. That's the difference in a team like ISU and UNI last year and an actual contender. We'll have to wait and see if they can make that jump this year.

Shockers not getting love from CBS here:

WICHITA STATE (8-0) - I'm not saying Gregg Marshall's Shockers won't be in the mix for an NCAA tournament berth, but I'm not ready to buy the fact that this will be a Top 25 team for more than another week or so. Carl Hall and Cleanothy Early have led the way and Wichita has some decent victories -- including one in Richmond against VCU. But it's still way too early to tell whether this will be a Missouri Valley contender to Creighton or a middle-of-the-pack team in the league.

I suspect that quote above will be posted in the shockers locker room later on today. Middle of the pack? That seems a little rough to me. Hopefully Wichita State can keep the winning streak going until conference play.

Way too harsh. In fact, it is a cheap shot.

No doubt that WSU is farther along then almost anyone thought or expected.

There is some question though as to how good WSu's opponents have been. VCU is the only team that is getting poll votes and all of the opponents have at least two losses. With the exception of perhaps So. Miss, there isn't a lot of meat on the noncon bone left either. I know that Iowa and Depaul are BCS schools, but they are bad schools (in the case of Depaul, a really bad BCS school). Tennessee doesn't appear to be anything special either - and was a participant in one of the ugliest NCAA games in recent memory a few days ago.

Hopefully, WSU wins out to keep the critics muffled.

Totally agree. If the shockers can end the nonconference with 1 or zero losses that helps the valley immensely. I'll be a huge shocker fan until Christmas for sure.
