What a terrible way to lose a ball game, feel for UNI and its fans on this one. Koch did appear to slap Odum's elbow (hard to exactly see as the video was really grainy) as he was taking the shot - and that is technically a foul. That's a tough call to make as a referee (you have to call things in the context of the game), I didn't see any of the game so I don't know how they were calling it (sounds like they were calling ticky-tack fouls all day). Koch was trying to do his best to make Odum alter his potential game winning shot, but caught his elbow instead. Tough spot to be in a defender's case, do you let him go for the off balance long 3 ball to win the game, or try to defend the shot at the risk of fouling??? Tough call, too bad he caught a bad break there.

No matter how it happened, that's a solid win for the Sycamores though, especially for their post-season hopes - they are most definitely the Valley's only shot outside of CU and WSU of getting any kind of at-large consideration.

VCU vs WSU 2 years ago. Foul called on WSU with .2 seconds left. Cost us a trip to the NCAA...but hey, we won the NIT!!!

Rarely post - want to show a video of the final minute of an NCAA Tourney game in 2011 of Butler vs. Pitt. go ahead and watch from 6:20 on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yz2JwZ4nYyo

Two fouls were called in the final 10 seconds of this game. It's not a perfect example - but it simple shows that, if you foul a player a foul should be called. The situation in which the foul occurs - doesn't matter. He hit him on the elbow and that impacted the shot.

Was at the game - the possible flagrant in question was not a flagrant in my bias mind. Odum went for the ball and actually met the ball at it's peak while still in the hand, the foul was on the body and it's what knocked him to the floor so hard. Good hard foul - it was an aggressive play on the ball no doubt.

If you go for the ball, it's not a foul, no matter how hard the contact.

Brushes or even a tap on the shooting elbow is gonna be called.

I don't have a dog in this fight either.

Completely agree. After watching the video that is a must call. Jake Koch clearly slapped on a wide open, all be it running jump shot, from the side none the less. Better question is why was no one in front of the ball and why is Jake slapping at him from the side? Either way, lucky break for ISUb and tough break for UNI.
Thoughts and prayers to WSU finding a new conference.

Yes if you foul it should be called no matter when it is in the game. The problem is Koch didn't touch Odum. That video actually clearly shows that.

Granted this game shouldn't have come down to this. We should have put you away and won comfortably. That didn't happen. We had our chances, but we didn't take advantage and I will be honest that isn't the first time that has happened.

And on the Odum on James foul. While it may have been cheap there was nothing about it that was flagrant or deserved more than just a regular foul.
