Conference Free Throw %

Postby Moose39 » January 28th, 2013, 3:50 pm

I had some free time at work today, so I rounded up the percentages that away teams shoot at a particular teams arena. Granted it's only for conference games, and not every team has played at every venue yet. Barring any mistakes, here's the numbers I got from ESPN

1. Northern Iowa: 47/71 = 66.19%
2. Indiana State: 57/82 = 69.51%
3. Missouri State: 49/70 = 70.00%
4. Evansville: 43/61 =70.49%
5. Southern Illinois: 49/67 = 73.13%
6. Illinois State: 61/83 =73.49%
7. Wichita State: 51/69 = 73.91%
8. Bradley: 47/62 = 75.80%
9. Creighton: 42/55 =76.36%
10. Drake: 62/80 = 77.50%

Hard to believe that the Shockers are shooting 74% from the free throw line in conference road games.

Very hard to believe.

It seems it should be much lower.

I'm amazed the Bears aren't dead last. Christian Kirk is at 48% and I think Drew is at 17%.

I don't actually understand what numbers he's citing here, but the Shockers are not shooting 74% in conference road games--it's actually much higher. After looking at WSU's games, I don't believe any combination actually comes out to 51/69.

The discrepancy is interesting, though:

WSU Home Games:
BU: 15-25 (.600)
CU: 9-19 (.474)
ILST: 12-17 (.706)
SIU: 20-30 (.667)
UNI: 14-20 (.700)
--------------
Total: 70-111 (.631)

WSU Away Games:
@Drake: 7-11 (.636)
@BU: 9-10 (.900)
@Evansville: 11-13 (.846)
@MOSt: 17-22 (.773)
-------------
Total: 44-56 (.786)

Considering none of his numbers for WSU line up with reality, I doubt the other teams do, either.

Another interesting point ... WSU is shooting nearly the exact same FG% on the road and at home: .4608 vs .4609. That's pretty impressive overall.

I may be understanding it differently, but I think the numbers he has are how opponents shoot while on the road at the specific venue. So, for instance, how Valley teams have shot free throws in Koch.
Thoughts and prayers to WSU finding a new conference.

Correct and why N. Iowa's gym is #1 at 66%

And peopled used to say shooting at the Dome was hard. Do you think the "physical" nature of some of our games leads to tired legs and poor FT shooting?

Gotcha. Read that a number of times and it never made sense to me, but you're right.

Wichita State is a very erratic free-throw shooting team. At times, they are one of the best teams in the country from the charity stripe (23 of 24 against a cupcake, with the one miss coming near the end of the game). However, in many games they are not good at all, shooting 40% or 50%.

A lot of that comes from the variation in shooters. Early, Armstead, preinjury-Hall, and a few others are very good shooters. However, Orukpe, Cotton, Williams, and post-injury Hall have all had occasional struggles.
