MVC Coaches on the Hot Seat

Postby dean_siu » February 9th, 2013, 10:23 pm

Who do you think may be on the Hot Seat for coaches this season? I'm not talking about coaches that may move up the ladder after this season, but rather those that may be shown the door by their university. To me, two stand out....

Mark Phelps @ Drake - 5 years after taking over as coach of an NCAA team, he hasn't had a winning conference record (unless the Bulldogs rally this season). I think he's worn out his welcome and the time has come for a change.

Barry Hinson @ SIU - Mario Moccia had to be thinking of at least a top 3 performance in the Valley when bringing in a new coach to take over the talent which was returning. Instead, he's ended up with more player defections, more legal problems, and more conference losses than anyone could have imagined. I know he's only one year on the job, but I don't see how SIU can accept this season's results and give him another year.

Outside of these two, I would be surprised of any other firings. The other coaches in the league have at least earned a chance for another season to improve. Anyone else disagree or have differing opinions?

Horrible post. Barry isn't going anywhere.

Looking at DeanSIU's posting history, I'd say somebody has an agenda.

He's either the one Chris Lowery supporter left in Carbondale, or he IS Chris Lowery. Those are the only logical explanations.

I know those of you who are fans of other programs probably want Barry to stick around so SIU can continue to flounder. If you're lucky, you may get your wish as our AD is totally incompetent and has bad coaching decisions almost every season (in one sport or another). However, how can you say Barry has earned the right to come back? How can a program accept all the defections which have happened and those which will happen after this season? (Even Barry's supporters admit this will happen). How can the legal problems of Diamond Taylor and Desmar Jackson just be ignored? And most importantly, how can you take a team that should have won a minimum of 13-14 MVC games and likely lead it to a 4-14 record (at best)? This season has been a disaster, while the coach we let go is taking a team to a Big 12 conference title and a likely 1 or 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. The AD, the coach, and the entire administration need to go as a result of this debacle.

you are delusional if you think Barry is going any where. SIU problem is not their coach, but lack of talent.

Yeah. SIU is going to pay the buyouts for Lowery, Barry, and Missy Tiber all at the same time.

Dream on.

SIU's problems are due to the previous administration. Barry has to clean house. Gonna take him a few seasons to clean up the mess Lowery left

It's a combination of those factors, but even the talent issue is a result of the coaching. Setty, Whitt, Drummond, Wilkins, and Breyer all decided they wanted to play for a coach instead of a travel agent. Look for Jackson, Daniels and others to make the same decision after this season. Lowery did everything he needed to do after the Dillard debacle to rebuild this program. Than, just as we were ready to reap the rewards, Moccia makes the decision to change coaches. Barry than takes this program to its lowest point in 20+ years in less than 6 months time. If that doesn't merit a change, than no college coach in the country should be fired after this season. SIU basketball is now an embarrassment and change is not only advisable...it is completely necessary.
