Also, I don't know why CU fans are shocked their team is falling apart right now, this is part of what Mac does...look at his career record in February
01-02 2-6
02-03 4-3
03-04 7-2
04-05 4-2
05-06 3-4
06-07 3-4
07-08 1-6
08-09 2-7
09-10 2-7
10-11 4-4
11-12 4-3
12-13 1-3
Cumulative February Coaching Record - 38-51, 0.427 winning percentage
Overall Coaching Record - 211-159, 0.582 winning percentage.
He's great early in the season, until the fact he only plays 7 guys the entire season starts to catch up with the team....every single year. You'd think he start to figure that out. You'd think he'd also be better at making adjustments from match up to match up with the same teams, yet he doesn't and never has. It's why teams are so much better against CU the second time than the first.
I was reading bluejayunderground yesterday after the loss, and came across this tidbit of information that I can't find back...maybe I didn't read it there but I thought I did and I can easily find the information back on my own, which I'll have to do... going into last nights game against UNI, Creighton had played 4 teams twice in conference play (Drake, ISUr, ISUb, MSU). In the first game Creighton was 4-0, in the return games Creighton was just 1-3 with their only win vs. MSU.
In the first games Creighton outscored it's opponents 323-251. In the return games they were outscored 302-289...including the game against MSU where they scored 91.
Add UNI into that and they are now 1-4 in return games, and still outscored.
The post went into bigger details about how many more TO's they had, how much lower their FG% was vs how much higher their opponents was, etc...
It was a pretty damming post about Mac's coaching adjustments - as well as the teams play.
It's also very interesting to see the dynamic of that team. It seems like if Manigat, Chatman, etc.. made a mistake last night Mac went out of his way to yell at them, however, if Gibbs, Etch-a-whatever, and Doug screwed up/made similar mistakes Mac didn't say a word. Couple that dynamic with the fatigue that has to be setting in with 5 guys averaging over 25 min per game (3 over 30) and only 3 more over 10 per game (and one of them is Josh Jones). I'm not going to do the math, but I'd bet Gibbs, McDermott, and Chattman are all closer to 35 mpg right now than 30 over the last 7-10 games, and GE is likely closer to 28-30 mpg than his season average of 22, and Managat closer to 30-32 than his 26 average.
I've read that to keep them fresh Mac is holding them out of practice. Couple the fatigue with not practicing and no wonder you're seeing teams holding them to lower shooting %, scoring more on them, rebounding better against, them, and seeing their TO's go up?
Mac is terrible at finding a balance of paying enough minutes and playing too many minutes....that has been shown for years.
It's been said before, and CU fans dismissed it, but it's showing right now. Without Doug they are nothing more than a 5th or 6th place team, and it's not going to get better next year with the loss of Gibbs and GE.
