The numbers are a bit off but they are close. HCGM made 1,482,000.00 last year and should be making 1,582,000.00 this year (and that doesn't include any bonuses he will earn for winning the Valley or NCAA Tourney games).

It's a great day to be the richest non-BCS program in college basketball.

Isn't Memphis in Conference USA this year?

Isn't Conference USA considered a non-BCS?

Lastly, isn't 1.69 mil more than 1.45 mil?

Btw....this list includes the following:

Frank Martin – Kansas State: $1.56 million

Rick Majerus – Saint Louis: $731,976

Larry Eustachy – Southern Mississippi: $430,000

John Groce – Ohio: $315,000

I guess you all are getting a reasonable ROI. Better than your baseball program does for that one guy I'd say. But yay for frivolous spending! How many faculty members and staff at Wichita State have gone without raises for several years now?

And your point being? The money being payed to GM is not be scrapped off the budgets of faculty. It is coming from revenue of the bball program and boosters.

I doubt they are taking money from faculty to pay the coach. When they need to increase pay, they go to the donors or increase ticket prices.

Just asking, but isn't there something like $5,000,000 a year being diverted from the general fund to make up the losses in the athletic programs at WSU ?

The students have voted some tuition funds go to athletics. I don't know the exact number, but I think $5 mill is in the ball park.

It's my understanding that the only money going to WSU athletics, other than what the athletic department raises, is money from the students that the students have approved in a vote of the students.

I may be mistaken, but when people post those types of comparisons for all Valley members , it was my recollection that there are both student fees and money from the general fund allocated annually to support WSU athletics , and that w/o these there is a substantial loss. Now out of fairness that is common practice at all the Valley schools sans perhaps CU. One of the reasons I remember it is that MSU is one of the few schools that do not have a student fee to support such and I've always felt that 1] we should and 2] it is an unfair comparison when other schools rip our financial situation when they have simply shifted more of the burden of supporting short falls in their athletics onto the backs of their students.

But I think the other point is that if both of those points are true for WSU, then Marshall's salary does indeed come from short changing other facets of the University, because if the money used to fund him well beyond the norm for a non BCS football revenue school was diverted back into athletics, then less money would have to be taken from student fees and the general fund to compensate the shortfalls and that money could be reallocated to other academic needs.

There was a thread on the old Valley message board discussing athletic budgets and student fees used to support it. Wichita State had by far the largest private donations of any school in the MVC. I think it was somewhere around 4M a year.

Student fees were also listed and SwoMo, SIU-C, and NIU, were among the top Valley schools leaning hardest on the students to pay the bills. Wichita State was near the bottom. There is no way our university president would have ever agreed to raise tuition prices to support HCGM's near multi-million dollar salary.
