They defended CU's lob plays pretty well as far as I could tell.

If it was the worst defense CU would have been shooting layups and it didn't sound like there were many. They shot the best anyone has ever shot against the shockers. More on their ability to make shots and not so much on the defense. It was a good offensive game to have heading into stl. Maybe not the one seed but they still have a good chance of putting something together.

Creighton was scoring a ton of points inside the paint off drives, alley-oops (mostly to players with 4 inch verticals), and Doug inside. They almost never shot outside with a guy in their face.

Yes, they made shots, some ridiculous. But the Shockers definitely had a very bad defensive outing all on their own. Statistically, the worst in the 107 years. Bad interior defense (again, tons of open lay-ups), and horrific perimeter defense.

I have no idea what to expect from the Shockers in the tournament. We've looked very beatable.

If by "very well" you mean: "Gave up 10+ easy points on lob passes to guys that SHOULD NOT BE GETTING LOBS," than yes, they did "very well."

denjayfan1 wrote:The only thing I would say is that Wichita didn't defend the perimeter very well at times as CU got some open looks for 3 when the defenders got screened, otherwise I thought their interior defense was good.

I'd agree. There were a few plays where the perimeter defense was quite bad. Especially at the end where McDermott was able to drain a few wide open 3s.

I think that speaks very well of Creighton's ability to play inside out all night. Creighton shot 85% inside the arc and 52% from 3. You pretty much just have to work the interior more than the perimeter in that case.

That's about the only part of Wichita's game that I thought was terrible.

Disagreed. There some open layups, and the three (?) lob passes were very poorly defended. But for the most part, the defense was very good and very physical. It just didn't stop them.

It was not a bad defensive outing. It was statistically the most insane shooting from an opponent against WSU in 107 years. It was NOT on bad defense, though. We've defended better, but we've also defended far worse. We played a good game ... they played much, much better.

Quit trying to make it about us. Creighton deserves all the kudos in the world for that game. I don't think it says a single damn thing about WSU, except that I'm very happy with how we played coming off of that mediocre Evansville game. All I can hope is that we see Creighton in the finals and they're more mortal on a neutral court.

I can see from your perspective that the Shockers did not defend the lob well considering they are a very good defensive team. I think I was using the other Valley teams as a frame of reference, which led to my evaluation as such.

Creighton deserves a ton of credit, but Wichita State's defense was the worst it has been all season. We gave up large numbers of almost completely unguarded shots and didn't really defend the paint. If Creighton has shot just "good", the difference would have been the winning margin (2-3 instead of 12).

If I were a neutral observer, I would come away with few positives about Wichita State's defense in this game. Not exactly an impressive outing. Very impressed by the difference between the two school's play on their senior nights.

congrats to CU. Sometime you just have to tip you cap. They have better skill players than WSU and they showed up today.

WSU had a good year and well exceeded pre-season expectations, especially when you account for the injuries. It is easy to lose perspective, but going 24-7 is not to be down about. WSU has some work now to do in STL. If they take care of business they will be in the NCAA tournament. Put they have put themselves in position to get an at-large. There are 8 other teams in the MVC that wish they were in WSU position.

As a neutral fan I must say it was a good showing by both teams today, especially on espn. Props to Creighton for continuing their hot shooting from wednesday night.
