Scheduling problems - Creighton etc

Postby Ali » March 21st, 2013, 8:14 am

I think the MVC fans and coaches who are pimping for Creighton to continue playing Valley schools are dreaming - including Jake. Why play a home - home with WSU when you can get K-State now. Why play UNI when you can get Iowa?

The loss of Creighton aleong with the end of the Bracket Busters and the MTN Challenge is going to be a real problem for our conference SOS next season. Hopefully we all schedule very difficult non-con games or we could pay the price in March.

You're assuming that the new Big East will be treated like other major conferences. It could also end up as a slightly above Mid-Major, but not really major conference. That could give them some of the same scheduling troubles.

I'm not saying this will happen, just that it could. We've never seen a pure major basketball conference before.

You are right that scheduling will be a problem next year. The end of the Mountain West challenge and not having CU in the league will hurt. We will go from 18 total games with CU in the conference to at most one or two.

For teams wanting an at large bid, it is going to become more important to avoid losses to the bottom teams in the conference. WSU had some wiggle room for making the tournament in part due to CU being in the league. There will be much less margin for an at large hopeful team next year.

First off, the Big East won't have scheduling problems - most of the schools in there now have traditionally weak schedules (Provi, Hall, DePaul, etc.). And they're a power conference, plain and simple.

This year, every MVC team had 9 non-conference slots. 1 committed to BB, 1 to the return BB game, and 1 to the MWC challenge. 6 open slots to fill.

Next year, without a replacement, every MVC team will have 11 non-conference slots. 1 return BB game will be part of it. 10 open slots to fill.

We really, really need to be on the phone with the WCC or A-10 to piecemeal a challenge together. Probably A-10 since they're getting skinned just like us. We need to fill a hole. Or get that 10th team quickly.

Creighton's schedule next year is kind of full. That said, I would love to continue playing MVC schools. Unlike other majors (hehe), I see the value (and good times) of playing MVC schools compared to Sunbelt.
