RJ Mahurin leaving Indiana State

he is transferring to Indiana Weslyan Univ. to play basketball with his younger brother.

RJ would have been a senior at ISU this next year. He'll do ok at IWU. RJ was very inconsistent as a shooter at ISU.

That's really disappointing news. ISUb will be stacked next year and Mahurin averaged 10.1 ppg- I'm pretty shocked that he chose to leave before his senior season when the Sycs looked primed to be a top 50 type team.

On the surface that makes little sense. He was a good player on a team that probably had a chance to dance. Not sure why you're playing college basketball if you don't want to go to the NCAA Tournament.

Because basketball is a job at the D1 level and some of these young adults are burned out by their Jr or Sr year.
There is no difference between basketball and life. Give both your best and ignore the "fans" on the sideline.

Plus 1. Too bad for ISUb as RJM was a quality big.

If it becomes a 'job', then it's probably time to move on. Real world might not be too kind to Mr. Mahurin unfortunately. It's hard to transfer out of paying bills and putting food on the table. Tough break for the 'Trees, I had them pegged as a contender next season.

Indiana Wesleyan is a really good NAIA school. Tough break for ISU, but if that's what works for him then it's cool. D-I athletics is not for everyone, nor should it be. Playing college sports requires sacrifice anyway, but these kids have to give up a whole lot at this level. NAIA level you can still play against good athletes (in general it's quite a bit better than Division III) and have fun doing it.

That stinks for ISU.

What is most strange about this move is the timing. Right before your senior year? The possibility of credits not transferring and not being able to graduate would seemingly be reason enough to stick it out one more season. Add to that the fact that you are a starter and a key cog on a team that will be picked to finish first or second and it even makes it more of a head scratcher.

Burnout notwithstanding, the only way this makes logical sense is if Mahurin wants to pursue a course of study that InSU doesn't offer.
