I'd like to bring in NMSU, Belmont, and Detroit and go to 12, personally. NMSU gives us an immediate contributor in basketball. Belmont would be a contributor in basketball and a solid market. Detroit wouldn't be a bottom feeder and would bring in a major market, and I could see them taking off if they could put a good team on the court for a few years in a row. We expand the geographic footprint by three states, basketball is in good shape, and our markets are bigger than before.
UIC does nothing but give us Chicago, when we already have multiple programs in that state.
TV and travel, they're big obstacles. Travel more so I think. There's no question it would be a burden in Olympic sports to make it work.
I wouldn't blame Elgin and friends for ignoring them. But just as a pure basketball product....they're the best candidate. Period.
I guess there also could be a flight risk issue if NMSU someday backdoors into a new football conference that requires them to move the other sports too.
