He's a real humble and nice guy, wanting the community to be a great place, and for his athletes to succeed in the classroom and the court.

Sounds a little like Mike Cohen. Great guy. Also, program wrecker.

I understand wanting a former player to succeed, but from an outsider's perspective his track record doesn't inspire confidence (contrary to what someone like Geno Ford has done and is doing at BU). I am afraid your attendance and revenue is going to take a real shot to the nuts this year. That will only make things more difficult.

Very astute comparison.

Good luck with that motto and mantra.

SIU and Northern Illinois have recently both blown up their rosters and replaced them with highly rated recruiting classes, and the results have been unmitigated disasters. Too many underclassmen with no senior leadership on or off the court, who don't know college basketball, all figuring it out together, and in these times with freshmen and sophomores transferring at a higher rate than ever it's getting even more difficult. Muller is taking a huge risk and it will be very interesting to watch next season.

A recent article about Montgomery's attempt to blow up the Huskies roster here:

Yep. Perfect comparison. IlSU is absolutely as likely to make the Final Four as WSU was last year.

Good thing you guys are two years removed from winning the NIT championship, a year removed from a 6 seed in the NCAA tournament, with a proven head coach and returning half your roster.

A lot of people expected WSU to make the Final Four the year before. I don't know if WSU has ever been in IlSU's situation, and they certainly haven't made the Final Four in that situation.

Other than Johnny, I'm glad they're all gone. That's my honest opinion.

You can say its your honest opinion now, and I don't have any reason to not believe you ... but it's really easy to say things in retrospect. From where I'm sitting, it looks like you're closing your eyes, crossing your fingers, and muttering "it's all going to be okay" over and over again.

Which I can certainly respect more than being a doomsayer, but realistically, this is going to be a very bad team, and most of Muller's decisions are insuring that it's going to be worse (this season, at least).

More like Randy Smithson who was a former player and wasn't "polished" enough D1 coach. Reminds me a lot of Muller.

No one said anything about the Redbirds making the Final 4 next year. Taking that comment out of context is nothing more than message board bullying. WSU made the Final 4 with plenty of new faces stepping up; an awesome accomplishment but definite surprise. The idea that ISU, with a team full of newcomers, could be average in a mostly unproven MVC is not that far fetched. It's improbable, sure, but not ridiculous.

This upcoming season looked rocky the minute Nic Moore decided to transfer. It was a perfect time for Muller to put his stamp on the program. Dan and Dana were billed as solid recruiters when the were hired. I expect to see the average and versatility of the talent improve. I agree that this could blow up in Muller's face. That wouldn't shock me. I'll also reserve judgement until the end of Muller's 3rd year. The biggest difference between Muller and Lowery at this point is Muller is driving away someone else's recruits. I'm willing to let this thing play out. HCGM had a disappointing Year 1 in the MVC as well...

Williams, Cotton, Orukpe, Armstead, Hall, White

WSU may have had some new faces, but that's 4 seniors and 6 guys who probably would have finished second in the MVC without some of the new faces really shining.

We saw what Muller did with a team that had a lot of returning talent and was the pre-season #3 pick in the Valley. The team tanked and just barely avoided Thursday night. Now Muller is going to try to take the 6th place team (that was considered to have a lot of talent), get rid of all the returning players except one Fr, and bring in a whole new team to compete in the Valley.

Good luck with that. I'm going to have to move Loyola up to 7th in my off-season picks. I wouldn't be surprised if Hinson's disaster at SIU can beat the Redbirds next year.
