League commissioner Doug Elgin said Illinois State proposed the Valley to grant Hawkins partial relief from the two-year rule by allowing him to play in every game during the 2014-15 season except the Redbirds' two regular-season matchups against Wichita State. A committee of five league officials met about the request for three hours and ultimately decided to grant it last week.

Yes. ISUR is the bad guy here that screwed the league's competitive balance. Put the responsibility w here it should be.

Illinois St only needs to look out for Illinois St. If we made an offer that was accepted by the MVC which allowed Hawkins to play earlier, good for us. The other 8 schools can piss and moan all they want.

It may mean he is good....it could also mean that a player can play against them that can't against WSU.

You don't think other coaches would be upset if Cleanthony couldn't play against UNI but could everyone else?

Tuttle against everyone except Drake?

Those are first team MVC players that you are comparing him to. Next year will be his freshman year. My gut tells me that the coaches are overreacting a little but I agree that the ruling isn't all that fair regardless of how good he is.

I don't think it thickens at all. It clears things up. Marshall made the decision not to waive him, which is fully within the set rules. Then Illinois St basically begged by trying to "compromise" and the Valley sided with them.

All anger from other teams and fans can be directed at the conference only. This decision isn't on WSU at all. It was out of their hands once they denied the waiver, which they had every right to do based on the previously set rules put out by the league. They then changed the rules.

The only other alternative is he is not allowed to play for 2 years. Why have rules if you are not going to abide by them?
