"MVC’s intraconference transfer rule that states a student-athlete who signed with one Valley school can’t play with another for two years after starting classes"

What classes did Teddy take at WSU?

That's the question I have at this point. I thought he never was able to take classes because of his non-qualifier status. If that is the case, then how does the rule apply? Again, the part that irks me in particular as a UNI fan is that we were told by the conference that they would not enforce the rule on Doug before we released him. He had not taken any classes but had enrolled for summer school already at the time everything happened.

Unsurprisingly, there's a fair bit of vitriol being tossed Marshall's way from ISU fans on their board.

#1 - Eight MVC schools/coaches/fans should be irked at the Valley ruling.

#2 - Marshall had nothing to do with the "creative sugestion". The MVC decided the rule was in play (not WSU/Marshall) and followed protocol by asking Marshall for a waiver. He declined. Somehow, according to at least two Redbird fans, this equates to "everything having to do with Valley Men's basketball runs through Greg Marshall".

#3 - Marshall hires Dana Ford, asking for a two-year commitment. Ford agrees via handshake. Ford recruits Hawkins to WSU. Hawkins signs LOI, encumbering a scholarship for half a year. Ford leaves for a conference foe after one year, eventually bringing with him the same player WSU spent their resources recruiting and signing. Anyone who says they would expect their coach to grant the waiver, given the same circumstances is either disingenuous, a liar, or both.

As an ISUr fan, I'm pumped that Teddy will play next year. However, there are 8 coaches with legit concers about the ruling. Marshall was well within his right to decline the waiver and it sounds like he did. Nothing to be mad about there. It would be easier if the conference just went by the normal NCAA rules and he just sat out one year.

What drives me nuts (even about my own fan base) is the over the top homer-ism and my coach/team/players can do no wrong. Lots of ISU fans don't like Marshall because they think he whines to get every call. Personally, if someone is fighting for their guys, that makes them competitive, not a whiner. Here, Muller was listed as "begging" to get Teddy to play. Reality is both coaches are fighting for their guys. As a fan, I wouldn't want it any other way. I'd want my coach to fight and claw for every advantage. No different than players doing the same on the court. Unfortunately it will always rub others wrong. Some just can't look at it from the other side and say "I'd want my coach to do the same in that situation too."

As for the Dana Ford leaving early issue, I get why WSU fans and staff would be ticked, but you have to understand that getting a promotion and to your old school would be something nearly everyone would do. I'd be upset if that happened here but would understand.

I think there are nine teams with a gripe. Marshall did not allow the waiver. The league then skirted the rules with a "compromise." Pretty sure they are taking after the NCAA, and the only thing they really compromised was their integrity. Why should WSU have to play against Hawkins at all during the 2-year period, including the MVC tournament?

I'm not going to pout about it (and neither is Marshall) because:

1. I'm not entirely convinced any of this is ever going to matter. He still has to get qualified and eligible. Something he's failed to do like 5 times now, even with people bending over backwards to help him.

2. I think WSU will be a strong team for the next several years and will face many players of higher caliber than Hawkins.

He signed...taking classes doesn't matter.

I agree with your #1 and #2 and I don't think the comment on our board makes sense in this case. I would add to your #3 that Teddy wasn't a Shocker because he didn't qualify, not because Dana took him with.

The only other alternative is he is not allowed to play for 2 years. Why have rules if you are not going to abide by them?

Exactly. The conference gives ISU an undeserved gift and they still whine like a bunch of babies. I guarantee there would have been no bending of the rules if the roles were switched.

Did you actually read the article?
Illinois State coach Dan Muller said he respected the Valley’s decision and is “happy Teddy gets to suit up and play in the games next year.” Not sure where the whining part comes in.

I took his comment to mean ISU got 93% (all but 2 games of next season) of what they wanted - contrary to league rules - but ISU fans are still whining about Marshall.

I agree about Teddy not qualifying, but after the bad blood created by Dana leaving prematurely, ISU and Ford ending up with a player he recruited to WSU was only going to add to it.
